COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men draw against Whatcom; Women win big

BELLINGHAM — The No. 1-ranked Peninsula College men’s soccer team had the first blemish on their perfect record with a 1-1 tie against Whatcom.

Whatcom is a solid team that came in to Saturday’s match 3-0-0 in the North Region and 6-2-0 overall. Whatcom and Peninsula are now tied on top of the North standings with identical records of 3-0-1.

Meanwhile, the women won easily, burying Whatcom 7-0.

Whatcom scored in the 24th minute, the first goal allowed by the Pirates in three games. Peninsula responded just two minutes later when Austin Collins made a great cross into the box Jeremy Obah headed the ball perfectly into the corner of the net.

The game remained locked 1-1 the rest of the game. The Pirates had one good shot in stoppage top in the second half on a free kick. Clemens Bordewieck headed the ball high off the free kick, but the Orcas’ keeper was able to jump up and gather the ball in. Peninsula outshot Whatcom 9-3.

Women’s game

Though the final score was lopsided, the women’s match was actually for first place in the North Region as Whatcom came in to the match 2-0-1 in the North. A Pirates’ loss or a tie would have created a big logjam in the standings with Peninsula, Skagit Valley and Whatcom, but with the victory, the women gained control of the region with a 3-0-1 record.

The women got two goals from three different players. Atianna Tauiai Fuamata-Ma’afala, ISIS-Jade Bryant and Kasi Baker all scored a pair of goals. Cailey Ridgeway had the seventh goal, while Alyssa Carney earned an assist. The Pirates outshot the Orcas 24-2 as Whatcom had just one shot on goal.

The men and women have a full week off and return to play at home Saturday for Fan Appreciation Day. The men play at noon against Shoreline (1-1-0, 3-3-2) and the women play the Dolphins (0-3, 0-3) at 2:15 p.m.
