COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men and women earn road wins over Skagit Valley

MOUNT VERNON — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team remains undefeated and the women’s team returned to its shutout ways as the Pirates swept a doubleheader on the road against Skagit Valley.

The Pirate men rebounded from a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second-half goals, including two from leading scorer Caio Maciel in the 60th and 66th minutes. Both goals were assisted by Eddie Benito.

Micah Weller scored in the 80th minute to pad Peninsula’s cushion off an assist from Christopher Chertude.

Aaron Zavolokin had three saves in goal for the Pirates.

In the women’s game, Peninsula goalkeeper Kasie Lough recorded three saves to earn her fifth save of the season, which ties her for first in the Northwest Athletic Conference with Everett’s Rachel Leupold.

The Pirates, who were coming off their first loss in more than a year to Everett on Wednesday, reached the scoreboard early in Saturday’s match when Michele Whan hooked up with Mary Pierce for a goal in the 10th minute.

Freshman C.J. Stetser scored Peninsula’s other two goals, one in the 41st minute off an assist from Olivia Moore and the other assisted by Port Angeles High School graduate Paxton Rodocker in the 53rd minute.

The Peninsula (5-1, 7-1) women return to action Tuesday afternoon for a match against Edmonds (4-1-1, 6-1-1), followed by a Wednesday tilt with Lower Columbia (0-7-0, 1-7-1). Both games are at 2 p.m. at Wally Sigmar Field.

The Pirate men (5-0, 7-0) face Edmonds (3-1-0, 3-4-1) on Wednesday at 4 p.m., also at Wally Sigmar Field.
