COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula College women set record with 20 goals against Shoreline

SHORELINE — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team set a school record Saturday, though the team did its best not to, said coach Kanyon Anderson.

The Pirates beat a weak Shoreline team 20-0, breaking the old record for goals in a game, which was 15, set in 2012.

Meanwhile, the men got four goals from Abdurahim Leigh en route to a 6-1 win over Shoreline.

Anderson stressed that the Pirates did not try to run up the score.

“It wasn’t a record we were trying to set,” he said. Shoreline only had nine players available, so the Pirates played most of the first half and all of the second half with nine players.

Anderson played his entire roster, but said there is a new NWAC rule that teams can only dress 22 players for road games. The Pirates have 32 on the roster and he would have liked to have gotten some of the less experienced players in the game.

“I was basically swapping good players out for other good players,” he said.

Shoreline had only played three games coming into Saturday’s match and allowed 13 goals against Bellevue and another six against South Puget Sound. The Pirates had scored 21 goals in their past two matches coming in to Saturday.

Anderson said the atmosphere at the game remained friendly because everyone was aware it was an unusual situation. He told his players afterward he was proud of their sportsmanship and kindness toward Shoreline.

Shawna Larson led the Pirates with six goals, giving her 12 for the season, tops in the NWAC. Port Angeles High School grad Anna Petty continued her hot streak, scoring a hat trick to give her eight for the season, third in the NWAC.

Emily Eckert, Brooke Reiber, Caneel Corpuz and Alexia Rodriguez-Bur all scored two each while Sequim’s Hannah Wagner scored a goal and had two assists.

Elliana Barden and Shaylynn Baay also scored.

After this game, the Pirates have scored 64 games in eight games and 41 in their past three games.

Men’s game

In a game that was a little more competitive, the Peninsula men got goals from Leigh in the 14th, 18th, 46th and 60th minutes. That gives him six goals for the season, tied for second-most in the NWAC.

Manny Garcia and Konrad Mueller also scored goals for the men, while Nil Grau had two assists. Alfie Tucker, Fin Muotune and Julius Koelle all had assists.

The Peninsula women (3-0, 8-0) will play at Edmonds (0-3, 1-4-1), while the men (2-1, 5-2) play Edmonds (0-3, 0-5) at 4:15 p.m.
