COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula College women one win from repeating as NWAACC champions

TUKWILA — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team scored two early goals and then held on to beat Walla Wall 2-0 in the NWAACC semifinals at Starfire Sports Complex.

The top-ranked Pirates will play for their second straight NWAACC title against fifth-ranked Edmonds today at 3 p.m.

The Pirates scored their first goal in the 14th minute after advancing the ball down the field quickly following a defensive stop.

Bronte Fitzsimmons set up Dominique Niedziela to give Peninsula a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, Fitzsimmons scored a goal of her own off a pass from Bri Afoa.

Peninsula (19-2) held on from there, despite playing most of the second half with only 10 players after Fitzsimmons received a red card a few minutes after halftime.

Walla Walla (19-2-1) entered the match as the top scoring team in the conference, but the third-ranked Warriors were unable to solve the Pirates’ defense.

Peninsula goalkeeper Emily Flinn made three saves and earned the shutout.

Edmonds (16-2-3) defeated Clackamas earlier 2-1 Saturday. Port Townsend graduate Irina Lyons scored the Tritons’ first goal on a penalty kick in the 51st minute.
