PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College dominated North Idaho College in a soccer doubleheader at Wally Sigmar Field.
The Peninsula men surprised the perennial national powerhouse Cardinals 5-1, while the women earned a 4-0 shutout.
The season’s first Alaska Airlines NWAACC Coaches Polls were announced Tuesday, and the Pirates are ranked No. 1 in both the men’s and women’s polls.
In the national junior college poll, the Peninsula men moved back into the top 10 and No. 10, while the women are ranked 18th.
The Pirate men got on the scoreboard early in Tuesday’s game when Alex Martinez was fouled in the box and then converted on the penalty kick at the 10-minute mark. Then, 10 minutes later, Erick Urzua scord off an assist by Ash Apollon.
The Pirates went up 3-0 on a goal by Keevan Webb, assisted by Martinez.
North Idaho spoiled the shutout with a goal in the 38th minute to make it 3-1 at the half.
Peninsula put it away in the second half with goals by Kalei Gallarde and Caio Maciel, assisted by Apollon and Christian Martinez, respectively.
“This was a really nice win for us today,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.
“To be able to play a national junior college and have this result really says a lot.
“The guys are continuing to play well and are really knocking the ball around.
“[But] still giving up goals, which we need to work on.”
Next up for the Pirates (2-0-0, 8-0-1) is a home conference match Saturday against Pierce (0-1-0, 0-3-1) at 2 p.m.

Peninsula 4, North Idaho 0
PORT ANGELES — The Pirate defense got rather offensive, scoring three goals and shutting out the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Sophomore defender Shelbi Vienna-Hallam scored the first two goals of the match, and fellow sophomore defender Miranda Sochacki contributed the third goal.
Vienna-Hallam’s two scores were both assisted by Bronte Fitzsimmons, and Vienna-Hallam assisted on Sochacki’s goal for an Aussie to Aussie connection.
Mary Pierce made it 4-0 for Peninsula in the 86th minute off a pass from Brittney Yoshimura.
Kasie Lough recorded the shutout.
The Pirates (2-0, 3-2) face NWAACC foe Pierce (1-1-0, 2-4-0) in Lakewood on Saturday.
