TUKWILA — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team finished up its two-game preconference series at the Starfire Soccer Complex with a 2-1 win over Spokane, while the PC women battled Columbia Basin to a 0-0 draw.
The men got goals from Tim Deser and Hayahide Sakamoto.
Despite the close score, Peninsula dominated with shots, outshooting the Sasquatch 29-6. The Pirates had 11 corner kicks to zero for Spokane.
“I thought we did really well against a really challenging opponent,” said coach Jake Hughes. “That’s a team that will be in the thick of things at the end of this season.”
Hughes said the Pirates dominated at times with a lot of chances, but missed some opportunties.
“Our one downfall is we need to put the game to bed when we have the chance,” Hughes said.
The women likewise dominated in the offensive end, but couldn’t break through for a score against Columbia Basin. The Pirates outshot the Hawks 26-4 with 11 shots on goal.
“We defended really well. We have some work to do on the offensive side,” said women’s coach Kanyon Anderson.
Anderson sees positives in 26 shots and no goals.
“In the moment, I was frustrated. It would’ve been nice to put a couple of those away. But in some ways, it’s a positive because it raises our motivation. We have to find a way to manufacture goals.”
The men (2-0) next play in a home opener nonconference match at Wally Sigmar Field at 4 p.m. Sept. 5 against Wenatchee.
The women (1-0-1) scrimmage Friday at Sigmar Field, then begin North Region play at Skagit Valley on Sept. 11.
