PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College soccer women won their seventh straight North Division title with four league games left in the season, staying perfect in a dominating 15-0 thrashing of Shoreline.
The Peninsula men also beat Shoreline 4-1 to remain undefeated in the North Division.
In addition to securing the division championship, the women’s team, defending NWAC champion, ranked No. 1 in the Northwest Conference and No. 8 in the nation among community colleges, set or tied season records in the win.
The team’s leading scorer, also the leading the scorer in the NWAC, Sydney Warren, scored four goals in the win to give her 25 for the season, breaking the old Peninsula record previously held by Bri Afoa with 23.
Her teammate Jordyn DiCintio had three assists and a goal against Shoreline, giving her 23 assists for the year, also leading the NWAC and tying Bronte Fitzsimons’ record set in 2013.
“Each year you have to look at your team and set realistic goals,” head coach Kanyon Anderson said.
“With the talent we have this year, we knew we should win the North Division. And now our sights are set on winning the whole thing,” Anderson said.
Kelly Kevershan, normally another good assists player like DiCintio, had a hat trick with three goals in the game, while Shantel Torres-Benito had a goal and an assist and Jayna Morikawa had two goals.
Also scoring goals were Emelie Small, Samantha Guzman, Yasmin Escobar-Moreno and Nicollete Paredes. Picking up assists were Maddy Parton, Cindy Vasquz, Pi’llani Chaves, Janis Martinez-Ortiz and Sarah Reiber.
The women (11-0, 14-0) have an unbeaten streak of 32 matches going back to last year.
They have 11 shoutouts this year and have not given up a goal since a match against Everett on Sept. 13.
Here’s where the numbers for this year’s team really get amazing — the Pirates have outscored their North Division opponents 97-1 and have outscored all of their opponents this year 113-5. The NWAC season scoring record is 129, set up by Walla Walla in 2007. With four regular season matches left, that record is definitely within reach.
In addition to Warren’s goal-scoring, the Pirates have four other players — Taylor Graham (12), Martinez-Ortiz (11) and Parton (11) in the top 10 in the NWAC in goal-scoring. Warren is also leading the NWAC in points with 55 and the Pirates have five players — DiCintio (34), Martinez-Ortiz (34), Graham (31) and Parton (30) — in the top seven for points. (Two points for a goal, one for an assist).
Men’s Soccer Peninsula 4, Shoreline 1
SHORELINE — The Peninsula men maintained their hold on second place and remained undefeated in league play with a 4-1 win over Shoreline.
The Pirates got their goals in Saturday’s match from Juan Carrillo-Perez, Jose Serna, Luis Perez-Martinez and Adrian Benitez. All of the goals were unassisted.
Darius Ochoa made five saves in goal to pick up the win.
The victory moves the men to 7-0-4 in North Division play (9-1-4 overall). Their 25 points trails unbeaten Whatcom’s 29 (Whatcom is 9-0-2 and both of those ties are against Peninsula) with four matches left in league, including one more chance for the Pirates to beat Whatcom on Oct. 25.
The Pirates’ Cesar Gervacio is second in the NWAC with 14 goals, while Carrillo-Perez with his goal Saturday moved into third place with 13 goals. The NWAC is led by Everett’s Aaron Byrne with 16 goals. Gervacio is also second in the NWAC in points with 31, while Carrillo-Perez has 31 points. The Pirates’ Joey Hollimon is eighth in the NWAC with 22 points.
The Pirates next play at Everett. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m. with the men’s game following.
