COLLEGE SOCCER: PC men’s soccer plays UW tough in scrimmage

SEATTLE — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team kept up its tradition of playing spring scrimmages against the University of Washington.

The defending NWAC champion Pirates acquitted themselves well in Sunday’s match, finding themselves behind just 1-0 at the half and ultimately falling 3-0 at the end at UW’s field. UW isn’t just any team, either. The Huskies were the Pac-12 champions in 2022, ranked No. 11 and played in the NCAA “Soccer Cup” tournament.

Last year, the Huskies came to Port Angeles to play Peninsula at Wally Sigmar Field in an exhibition. UW also caught the ferry to Victoria and played the University of Victoria later that same day. This year, the Huskies also played the Univ. of Victoria at their home field.

Peninsula coach Jake Hughes said the series of exhibitions against UW “serves multiple facets.”

“It’s a chance to test ourselves against a top-rated Division I team,” he said.

“It also can be a showcase for our players to potentially be recruited,” he said.

Hughes said Peninsula has a good relationship with UW going all the way back to 2012.

“They were very respectful to us and humble. It’s a pleasure to play them,” he said.
