PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men and women, both ranked No. 1 in the NWAC, remained perfect in a pair of shutouts over Edmonds College on Saturday.
The men won 7-0 with Pau Vivas and Julius Koelle each scoring two goals and the women won 12-0 behind a pair of hat tricks by Shiori Shintaku and Grace Widergren. With the victories, the men improved to 8-0 in the North Region and 11-0 overall, while the women improved to 7-0 in region and 9-0 overall.
In the men’s game, the Pirates actually took a little while to get heated up as the game was still tied 0-0 in the 21st minute. Once they got going, they goals came fast and furious with a flurry of seven scores in the next 48 minutes.
Nil Grau added to his NWAC-leading points total (36 on 13 goals and 10 assists) with a goal and an assists, while Ezrah Ochoa had a goal and two assists.
Angel Sandoval added a goal and Joshua Kanyere an assist.
Whilte the Pirates dominated, goalkeeper Walter Garcia actually faced five shots on goal, stopping all five shot to earn a shutout.
The Peninsula men are done at home until the postseason when the Pirates will almost assuredly host a playoff game. They have a tough opponent on the road at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against second-place Everett (5-2, 9-3). If the Pirates win, they lock up the North Region title with two more games to play.
Peninsula women
The Peninsula women got off to a fast start against Edmonds, scoring in the first 59 seconds and tallying eight goals in the first half in a 12-0 romp.
In addition to Shintaku and Widergren’s hat tricks, Shawna Larson scored two goals, while Paige Johnson and Risa Nishida each had a goal and an assist.
Rilee Leigh and Emma Crystal added goals, while Lauren Lases, Kyla Hughes, Eliana Borden and Rylie Echaveria all had assists as the women were able to pepper the Edmonds goal with 21 shots.
Jordan Labajo and Alexandria Naill combined for the shutout in goal, with Labajo making one save.
The women play at Everett (2-3-1, 4-4-2) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday looking to lock up another North Region championship with a win.
