PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula women’s basketball players could have been forgiven if they had a letdown this weekend against Edmonds after a huge win over first-place Whatcom earlier in the week.
Instead, the Pirates grabbed a 24-4 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a crushing 76-39 victory over Edmonds for their eighth win in a row Saturday, remaining all alone in first place in the North Region.
The men, meanwhile, had a tough close overtime loss, 92-89 to Edmonds, though the Pirates remain in a huge logjam for third place in the North.
Back to the women’s game, Sequim’s Hope Glasser scored 17 points to lead the Pirates, while Port Angeles’ Madison Cooke had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Kaganak and Port Angeles’ Millie Long each scored nine, while Ariyanna Camacho-Villafuerte led the team with six assists.
The Pirates dominated the boards, 44 to 24, and held Edmonds to 24.6 percent shooting (14-for-57). Edmonds’ 39 points were the second-lowest Peninsula has allowed this season.
The women last lost on Jan. 26 to Whatcom.

Peninsula men
The men got big games from Isaiah Sampson, Roosevelt Williams Jr. and Jaylin Reed, getting a Sampson bucket at the end of regulation to force overtime.
Williams hit a basket with 35 seconds left in overtime to give the Pirates a 90-89 lead, but Edmonds responded with a field goal with 16 seconds left and two free throws at the very end to seal the win.
Williams had 22 points, while Reed had 21 and eight rebounds. Sampson had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while KeAndre Hunter-Holiday contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.
The men are in a three-way tie for third place with Bellevue and Shoreline at 6-5 in the North. Olympic is leading the Region at 9-2, while Skagit Valley is 8-3. The men have games remaining with Bellevue and Shoreline, so they can help their cause for the postseason.
The Pirates women (10-1, 19-3) next play at Everett (7-3, 10-10) at 5 p.m. Wednesday while the Peninsula men (6-5, 14-9) play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Everett (5-6, 14-8).
