SHORELINE — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team scored 72 points in the first three quarters and had six players with at least nine points in an 82-61 road win over Shoreline on Saturday to grab sole possession of second place in the North Region.
The Peninsula men had a rough eight-minute stretch midway through the second half in a 74-67 loss to Shoreline.
The women were up 72-43 over the Dolphins after three quarters then cruised in the fourth. Both teams came in to Saturday’s game tied for second in the North at 5-1. The Pirates, now 6-1 in the region, remain one game behind unbeaten Whatcom.
The Pirates got big contributions from a trio of local players. Sequim’s Hope Glasser led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Port Angeles’ Madison Cooke hit three 3-pointers, finishing with 13 points and six rebounds.
Port Angeles’ Millie Long had 13 points, and led the team with four steals and four assists. Kelli-Jade Smith added 13 points, while Adam Kaganak had 10 points, and Ituau Tuisaula scored nine points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Peninsula (6-1, 15-3), next hosts Skagit Valley (3-4, 10-9) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Men’s game
The Peninsula College men’s basketball team got off to a solid start against first-place Shoreline, holding a 42-34 lead at the half and building that lead to 52-43 with 14 minutes, 36 seconds left to play.
But a 20-1 run over 8 1/2 minutes by the Dolphins put the Pirates into a 63-53 hole with 6 minutes left in the game.
The Pirates did rally, cutting the deficit down to 63-57 when Andre Sepeda hit a 3-pointer with 4:25 left. Shoreline responded with five straight points on a 3-pointer and a field goal, however, and that was the closest the Pirates got for the rest of the game.
Jaylin Reed led the Pirates with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Isaiah Sampson had 17 points and six rebounds.
Peninsula is still in a tie for fourth place in the North after two straight losses. The Pirates (4-3, 12-7) get another tough opponent at home at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Skagit Valley (5-2, 16-4).
