COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Port Angeles’ Daniel Cable all about dedication
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles football player Daniel Cable is the latest Roughrider to sign to move on to a college program.
Cable, the son of Ralena Cornelson and Dan Cable, is going straight to a four-year school to play football at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.
“This means everything to me, man,” Cable said. “It’s been a long process.”
Cable was an excellent all-around player for the Riders and was picked as the 2021 Peninsula Daily News’ All-Peninsula Football MVP after his senior season in December.
He was an outstanding defensive player in the secondary and returned kicks and punts.
Where he really made his mark was as a running back. He was effective in using his speed to turn the corner and using his raw speed, he would turn simple-looking sweep plays into huge gains.
And once he got a head of steam, few players could catch up to him.
Showing the influence that he had on his team, a huge group of coaches and teammates attended Cable’s ceremonial signing at Port Angeles High School on Monday.
Several of his coaches, teammates and family members spoke at length about Cable’s dedication to be the best athlete he could be.
His teammate and friend Jaziel Livingston, who is going to play football at Feather River College in northern California, called Cable, “the hardest-working man I’ve ever known. There’s something different about him.”
Roughrider head coach Dustin Clark only had Cable for one year but said it was a memorable one.
“He showed the best leadership by example that I’ve ever seen,” Clark said. “There’s a lot of kids here looking up to you. Hard work is the biggest thing that got you here.”
His former coach Troy Mann said that when it came to Cable, “the one word I can think of is ‘dedication.’ He’s wanted it for many, many years. He’s a good mentor to anyone in this room. That man right there.”
“I thank God, I thank my family, coach Mann for getting me in the weight room. This should be fun. Go Bruins,” Cable said.
Cable said he picked George Fox because he loved the people and the Newberg community.
“The football players there are awesome,” he said.
Cable is the second Olympic Peninsula football player to sign at George Fox in recent years. Former Sequim quarterback Riley Cowan signed to play there a couple of years ago.
The NCAA Division III team plays in a league with Whitworth, Pacific Lutheran and University of Puget Sound.
