MOUNT VERNON — Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist led the Peninsula College women with 14 points as the Pirates remained unbeaten and atop the Northwest Athletic Conference North Region standings.
Peninsula (5-0, 12-2), ranked No. 4 in the latest NWAC Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll, was in control from the start Wednesday night, rolling out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter and leading 37-18 at halftime after an eight-point second quarter by Julmist.
Julmist also added seven rebounds and three steals.
Alexa Mackey added 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists for Peninsula.
Talia Marini scored nine points off the bench and Sequim’s Hannah Bates added seven points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Pirates.
Peninsula faces last-place Everett on the road Saturday.

MOUNT VERNON — The Peninsula men’s basketball team’s three-game North Region win streak came to an end at the hands of No. 1-ranked Skagit Valley on Wednesday.
The Pirates allowed the Cardinals (3-1, 18-1) to shoot 51 percent from the floor (34 of 67) while hitting just 31.6 percent on 18 of 57 shooting in a 90-55 defeat.
Peninsula also was outrebounded 42-28 and committed 12 turnovers to Skagit Valley’s four.
Ese Onakpoma led the Pirates with 21 points, knocking down all 11 free throws to go with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Javon Ervin added 19 points, hitting 3 of 7 3-point tries.
Peninsula (3-2, 10-9) visits Everett on Saturday.

Onakpoma recognized as NWAC Player of the Week

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College’s Ese Onakpoma was named a Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Jan. 15-21.
Onakpoma led Peninsula to a pair of big wins, 89-71 over Bellevue and 93-79 against Olympic.
The sophomore averaged 29.5 points per game, six rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 blocks in two contests.
He played all but one minute in both games as he shot a lights-out 67.6 percent from the floor. His biggest game came against Olympic in which he dropped 34 points and made 13 of 16 shots from the field. He also shot 60 percent on 3s.
“Ese had a phenomenal week with big dunks in both games,” said head coach Bryce Jacobson.
