COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Port Angeles’ Maddy Hinrichs signs to play for Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho — Port Angeles High School product Madison (Maddy) Hinrichs has signed to continue her college basketball career with NCAA Division I Idaho State Bengals of the Big Sky Conference.

Hinrichs will arrive as a junior after playing a season each for Lower Columbia College and Whatcom Community College.

“Madison is a competitor with great leadership qualities,” Idaho State head coach Seton Sobolewski said. “She will be able to play multiple guard positions for us.”

Last season at Lower Columbia College, the do-everything Hinrich averaged 9.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.6 steals as a guard.

She scored in double-figures 13 times on the season, netting a season-high 18 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the floor at Southwestern Oregon on Dec. 10.

She grabbed five or more boards in 12 games on the season and hauled in a season-high nine against Columbia Basin on Nov. 19. As a Red Devil, Hinrichs finished with a 1.38 assist-to-turnover ratio, recording 84 assists to just 61 turnovers on the year. Hinrichs collected West First Team honors and West All-Defensive team honors while helping her squad to the NWAC West Division Title as well as an NWAC Elite Eight appearance.

A Port Angeles native, Hinrichs had a successful four-year high school career for the Roughriders earning multiple first team All-Olympic League honors. She was named the Peninsula Daily News All-Peninsula Girls Basketball Most Valuable Player her senior season after averaging 14 points per contest and leading Port Angeles to the Class 2A state tournament.

Hinrichs was a standout athlete for the Riders, lettering four years in basketball, three in volleyball and three in softball.

“Madison’s work ethic and toughness will be able to help us right away,” Sobolewski said.

Idaho State went 19-14 last season, winning three games at the Big Sky Tournament before falling to No. 1 seed Montana State in the conference championship game.
