EVERETT — The Peninsula men’s basketball team, down five points with 1:08 left on the road, made clutch shots down the stretch and got a critical steal and bucket from Ty Artis to pull out a come-from-behind 78-77 win over the Everett Trojans.
The game was a rare Monday night affair making up a game postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.
Artis finished the game with just three points, but made the critical game-winning play with the Pirates down 77-76 and only eight seconds left to play.
“Defensively, he was just incredible,” said coach Donald Rollman.
After the win, the Pirates are 6-4 and in third place in the North. The game was in contrast to some heartbreaking losses this season in which Peninsula lost some second-half leads.
“It was huge. That’s one of their first [come-from-behind wins],” Rollman said. “They were pretty damn excited afterward.”
Also hitting clutch shots were Keith Seldon and KeAndre Hunter-Holiday. With the Pirates down 75-70 with less than a minute to play, Seldon buried a 3-pointer with 57 seconds left to bring the Pirates within two points. After a Trojans’ basket, Hunter-Holiday hit a three with 15 seconds left to bring the Pirates within one point at 77-76.
Artis, who finished with nine assists, assisted on both of those 3-pointers.
Neal Garcia led the Pirates with 18 points and 4-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc, including three straight 3-pointers in the second half.
“He went on a 9-0 run all by himself,” Rollman said.
Isaiah Sampson finished with 13 points while Jaylin Reed had 10.
After playing two games in 48 hours, the Pirates get a break with no Wednesday game. They return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday against Everett (4-4).
