COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula women win opener at Wenatchee tourney

WENATCHEE — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team won its opening game of the season Friday at the Wenatchee Tip-off Tournament, getting a lot of contributions from Olympic Peninsula high school products.

The Pirates beat Walla Walla 66-41, outscoring the Warriors 18-4 in the fourth quarter to blow the game open.

Peninsula finished the game with 15 steals.

Kelli-Jade Smith led the Pirates with 19 points and four steals, while Ituau Tuisaula had 13 points and two blocks. Ariyanna Camacho-Villafuerte made a pair of 3-pointers.

Madison Cooke, a former Port Angeles Roughrider, scored eight points and pulled down four boards in 14 minutes off the bench. Sequim’s Hope Glasser hit three free throws, four rebounds and three steals. Port Townsend’s Gina Brown played seven minutes and Neah Bay’s Ruth Moss played 11 minutes.

The Pirates played Saturday night against Wenatchee after press deadline and will wrap up at the tournament by playing Spokane at 11 a.m. today.

The Peninsula College men were supposed to play an exhibition game at home Saturday against B.C. Prep out of Surrey, but that game was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
