PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start with a 26-point first quarter, then went on to beat Everett 72-49 on Saturday to remain in second place in the North Region.
Meanwhile, the Pirates’ men struggled in a 74-54 loss to Everett.
Everett and Peninsula came in to Saturday’s game tied for second place in the North at 3-1. With the win, the Pirates remained one game behind first-place Whatcom.
“We had pretty good energy. We beat them on the boards [38-33],” said coach Alison Crumb.
Five Pirates scored nine points or more. Ituaua Tuisaula led the Pirates with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Port Angeles’ Millie Long had 11 points, six boards and six assists.
Ariyanna Camacho-Villafuerte had 11 points, while Adam Kaganak scored nine. Sequim’s Hope Glasser had six steals, while Port Townsend’s Gina Brown had six rebounds.
The women (4-1, 13-3) next play at Bellevue (1-4, 4-8) on Wednesday. The women are ranked No. 4 in the most recent NWAC poll, though Crumb said that will likely change because the Pirates lost several days ago to Whatcom.
“We’re still one of the best teams in the NWAC,” she said. “We have very high expectations for this team. We’re very talented and very deep.”

Men’s game
Like the women, the men remain one game out of first place despite Saturday’s loss.
“Everything was on the line for Everett. We took their first punch in the mouth and came back pretty well, but then faded,” said coach Donald Rollman. “Honestly, I think it was our worst game since I’ve been at Peninsula.”
Rollman said the Pirates played hard, but just seemed out of sorts, especially on defense. Rollman was confident the team would bounce back.
“Our culture will hold us together. This won’t hold us down,” he said.
Peninsula was led by Jaylin Reed with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Isaiah Sampson had 10 points.
Peninsula (3-2, 11-6) next plays at Bellevue (2-3, 12-5) on Wednesday.
