PORT ANGELES — A lock-down defensive performance earned the Peninsula College women’s basketball team a 72-38 blowout win over Olympic in an NWAC home game Saturday.
The Pirates limited the Rangers to 12 of 43 (28 percent) shooting from the field and forced Olympic into 30 turnovers while committing just 14 themselves.
Peninsula swiped 18 steals from Olympic and also outrebounded the Rangers by a stunning 20 rebounds (44-24).
Bench points welcomed
Chasity Selden provided something Peninsula has been lacking at times this season — a boost off the bench. The freshman point guard posted 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting to go along with three blocks, two assists and a rebound.
Millie Long tallied another solid all-around performance, posting 16 points, grabbing eight rebounds to go along with five assists and three steals.
Jenilee Donovan was a menace defensively for Peninsula, grabbing a team-high eight steals to go along six points, five rebounds and two assists.
Tati Kamae added 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting with seven boards, three steals and two assists.
After stumbling out of the North Region gates with two road losses, the Pirates (3-2, 11-4) have won three straight conference games.
Peninsula visits Whatcom (2-2, 6-12) on Wednesday night.

PORT ANGELES — Mikey Medlock Jr. drained nine 3-point baskets to set a Peninsula College record as the Pirates dumped the Rangers at home Saturday.
Medlock hit 9 of 12 from beyond the arc and 11 of 12 on free throws to account for a game-high 38 points.
“Davien’s [Harris-Williams] record was eight and [Pirates assistant athletic director] Jeremiah Johnson came over to let us know Mikey was two away,” head coach Donald Rollman said. “I thought to myself, ‘What would Davien want me to do here?’ And I left him in to get two more.”
Rollman said Medlock’s massive night was a byproduct of his squad’s willingness to share the basketball.
Peninsula shot 61 percent for the game, hitting 34 of 56 shots overall, and 12 of 24 3-pointers. The Pirates had assists on 26 of 34 made baskets and never trailed the Rangers in the contest.
“We shared the basketball and I enjoyed our aggressiveness adjusting to their defenses. We got them in press, zone and man. Teams are trying to figure out concoctions to beat us, and we were phenomenal in terms of giving the ball up and making the right read and making the defense do the wrong thing. They were going back and forth all game long.
“We played inside out, hit the post, didn’t settle, and they couldn’t guard us at all in man. Mikey had a record-setting night, but all his points were in the flow of the offense and everybody scored.”
Peninsula also limited Olympic’s Wayne Jamison to three points. Jamison is averaging 17.1 points per game this season.
“We completely took away No. 5,” Rollman said.
“We really challenged the guys at halftime. We were up 10, but we took the game over in the second half and ran them out of the gym.”
Peninsula’s entire starting five reached double figures in scoring. Ese Onakpoma hit 7 of 10 shots, including some rousing slam dunks, to score 15 points with five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Roosevelt Williams Jr. added 12 points, a team-high seven assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Malik Jackson totaled 10 points, seven boards and six assists, and Max D’Amato added 10 points.
Peninsula (5-0, 18-1) will take its 10-game winning streak on the road to visit cellar-dweller Whatcom (0-4, 4-13) on Wednesday.
