PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team return home having earned road warrior status after winning three games east of the Cascades.
The women’s successful road trip to Walla Walla and Wenatchee highlighted a weekend in which Peninsula’s basketball teams went a combined 5-0.
The Pirate men went 2-0 as hosts of the First Federal Pirate Classic.
Women win two more
The women followed up Friday’s win over Columbia Basin at the Warrior Classic in Walla Walla with a 72-63 victory over the host Warriors on Saturday.
Sophomore Madison Pilster led the Pirates with 21 points, including 3 for 3 from 3-point range.
Imani Smith added 14 points and four steals for Peninsula and Neah Bay graduate Cierra Moss scored 12, nine of those coming on 3 for 5 shooting on 3-pointers.
Zhara Laster contributed 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Peninsula.
The Pirates then stopped in Wenatchee on Sunday looking to avenge their season-opening 66-65 loss to Wenatchee Valley.
And they did, beating the Knights 58-50.
Moss topped Peninsula with 16 points. Miranda Schmillen scored 11 and dished out a team-high three assists, and Smith scored nine points.
Pilster had seven points, and Gabi Fenumiai added six points and a team-high eight rebounds, five on the offensive end.
The Peninsula women (3-1) next play this weekend at the Raider Invitational at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom in Lakewood.
The Pirates open against tournament host Pierce (1-6) on Friday at 8 p.m.
Men’s Game
Peninsula 70, South Puget Sound 59
After scoring the game-winning basket in the Pirates’ win over Centralia on Saturday, Deonte Dixon kept scoring in the win over the Clippers on Sunday, as Peninsula went undefeated at its own Pirate Classic.
Dixon scored a game-high 26 points, including 3 for 5 on 3-pointers and 7 for 9 at the free-throw line, against South Puget Sound.
The Pirates took command early, building a 32-23 halftime lead.
The Clippers closed to within two points in the second half before Peninsula righted the ship and rebuilt its lead to as high as 11 points.
Malik Mayeux also scored in double figures for the Pirates with 14 points to go along with six rebounds.
Ryley Callaghan had a cold-shooting night, making only 2 of 10 shots for nine points, but he had a team-high five assists and two steals.
Domach Domach added six points and eight rebounds, while Alex Ironside scored seven points and Jonah Cook had six.
The Pirates (3-3) will play Friday and Saturday at the Big Bend Classic in Moses Lake.
