EVERETT — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s basketball teams both won on the road Saturday, with Ese Onakpoma erupting for 39 points in a 95-85 victory and Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist going for a double-double in her best game of the year in a 68-47 win.
Onakpoma, the reigning NWAC player of the week, poured in 28 of his points in the second half. He shot 14-for-22 from the floor (63.6 percent) and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Onakpoma also had six rebounds and five assists.
Port Angeles’ Wyatt Dunning had one of his best of the year with 17 points on 3-for-5 shooting from 3-point range.
Javon Ervin had a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Patrick Odingo and Antonio Odum each contributed eight points.
The Pirates shot 51.4 percent from the floor (36-for-70) in their highest scoring output of the year.
The game was closer than the score indicated as the Pirates were up just 83-81 with 2:12 left. The Pirates went 10-for-10 on their free throws with Onakpoma shooting 6-for-6 in the final two minutes to pull away from the Trojans.
With the win, Peninsula shot past Skagit Valley and Whatcom for sole possession of second place in the North Region at 4-2 (11-9 overall) Shoreline leads the region at 5-1.

Women’s game
In the women’s game, the Pirates remained perfect in North Region play by pulling down a whopping 62 rebounds against Everett, including 28 offensive rebounds. They outrebounded the Trojans nearly 2-to-1 (62-35). Six different players had at least five rebounds.
Neither team shot that well, but with the massive rebounding edge, the Pirates got off 82 shots while Everett had just 55.
Julmist scored 16 points and led the team with 12 rebounds. Ciera Tugade Agasiva had 20 points and eight rebounds.
Neah Bay’s Allie Greene had 10 points while Sequim’s Hannah Bates had eight rebounds.
The women improved to 6-0 in the North Region, a game ahead of Shoreline and Edmonds. They are 13-2 overall.
Both the men’s and women’s teams have huge games Wednesday night at home against Shoreline. The women’s game against the Dolphins (5-1, 14-5) begins at 5 p.m. while the Pirates’ game against the Shoreline men (5-1, 8-10) begins at 7 p.m.
