COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula women go to 2-0 to begin season

PORT ANGELES — The fourth quarter is the Peninsula women’s quarter so far this young season.

The Peninsula basketball women moved to 2-0 on Saturday, again using a big fourth quarter to close out Highline 69-59.

The Pirates outscored the Thunderbirds 20-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away. In their first game of the year, the Pirates outscored South Puget Sound 10-2 in the fourth to win by eight points. The women held the Thunderbirds to 2 for 9 shooting from the floor in the fourth and held South Puget Sound to 1 for 12 shooting for 3 for 21 shooting (14.3 percent) in the fourth quarter combined in the two games.

Sunshine Vicente led the Pirates with 15 points and six rebounds, while Leilani Padilla shot 4 for 4 from beyond the arc for 12 points and Ashlynn Sharp shot 4 for 10 on her 3-pointers for 12 points. Kameron Bowen had eight rebounds and seven points.

Peninsula (2-0) will next play at Lower Columbia College at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Port Angeles High School grads Nizhoni and Cheyenne Wheeler play for Lower Columbia.

Men’s Basketball

North Idaho 98, Peninsula 54

COUER D’ALENE, Idaho — In a rematch of last year’s NWAC championship game, defending champion North Idaho showed it’s still one of the top teams in the Pacific Northwest, beating Peninsula 98-54 in the men’s season-0pener.

The Pirates only return three players from last year’s team that played for the NWAC title.

Leading the Pirates was newcomer Davien Harris-Williams, who scored 20. Samuel Kahapea scored eight and K’Lum Strickland seven. Kahapea led the team with five rebounds.

The Pirates struggled from the field, shooting just 13 for 49 for the game (26.5 percent).

The men (0-1) will next play at the Skagit Valley College Turkey Tournament in Mount Vernon, beginning Friday against Highline. They will play Big Bend on Saturday and Tacoma on Sunday.
