MOUNT VERNON — The Peninsula women won in dominating fashion for the second straight game, crushing Skagit Valley 81-41 on the road Monday.
The game was a makeup of a contest snowed out last week.
The Pirates have outscored their opponents by a combined 160-65 over their past two wins. They also beat Olympic 79-24 this weekend.
The Pirates were led by Casandra White with 17 points and six rebounds. Leilani Padilla hit five 3-pointers (shooting 5 for 7) for 15 points, while McKenna Sargent scored 13 points in just 12 minutes in her first big game back coming off a broken foot in November.
“We had a couple of good defensive efforts,” said coach Alison Crumb. “The women are a little upset over our loss to Edmonds (74-67 on Jan. 11) and they’re playing with more purpose.”
The Pirates shot an outstanding 59 percent (13 for 22) from 3-point range and 50 percent (31- for 62) overall. White and Sunshine Vicente each had three 3-pointers.
“We did shoot it pretty well. We did some other things well that opened that stuff up,” Crumb said.
Kayla Johnson had an outstanding game with 10 points, eight assists and five steals and Vicente had nine points and six rebounds.
Crumb said the team will work Sargent more into the game as she recovers from her broken foot.
“She’s going to be huge for us. We have to get her back in game shape. She’s a traditional post, very physical on the post,” Crumb said.
Crumb said the Pirates can expect tougher competition later this week.
With the win, Peninsula has won eight of its past 10 games and is all alone in second place in the North Division. Peninsula (3-1, 10-5) next plays at Whatcom (2-1, 11-7) at 5 p.m. today. On Saturday, the women will host Everett (2-1, 10-8) at 4 p.m.
