Pirate women roll over Orcas in North opener

BELLINGHAM — Peninsula College opened its NWAC North Region slate with a dominant 85-34 win over the Whatcom Orcas in a women’s basketball contest Wednesday.

Ten of 11 Pirate players scored as Peninsula spread around the minutes in the blowout.

Peninsula rolled out to a 23-8 first-quarter lead and was up 29 at half.

Ten of the Pirates’ 11 players scored in the game. Alecsis Smith posted 16 points, four rebounds and a pair of blocks in 12 minutes inside while point guard Shania Moanunu added 15 points and teammate Ciera Agasiva contributed 13.

Lexie Mackey had a strong all-around game with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.

Freshman Carliese O’Brien made a strong impact off the bench with nine points, 10 rebounds and three assists. Makena Patrick chipped in seven points and eight rebounds, Bobby-Skyy Ragsdale scored seven and Ryana Moss hit a three-pointer.

Forks’ Kadie Wood, who earned a 4.0 grade-point average last quarter, also had a bucket in the win.

Peninsula (1-0, 9-2) hosts Bellevue at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Men fall

Down three starters, the Pirates fell 85-76 to the Orcas.

Trailing 37-36 at halftime, the Pirates struggled on the glass against Whatcom, which outrebounded them 50-31.

Sophomore guard Antonio Odum led the Pirates with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jaiden Blackmon came through with 14 points and nine rebounds, Isaiah Lopez had 13 and former Roughrider Isaiah Shamp contributed 10 points and six rebounds.

Port Townsend’s Keidan Guzman saw the floor for his first action of the season for Whatcom and had five points and two steals in 12 minutes of court time.

The Pirates (0-1, 6-8) host Bellevue on Saturday at 4 p.m.
