TACOMA — The Peninsula College men’s basketball team beat Shoreline 101-95 to claim fourth place at the Tacoma Crossover Tournament.
Pirates sophomore Xavier Bazile averaged 22.7 points in the three-day tournament, which was his first game action this season, to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
The Peninsula women fell to Clackamas 81-59 in the third-place game at the Clack Crossover Tournament in Vancouver, Wash.
The men went 2-1 at the Tacoma Crossover, following up a loss to Columbia Basin on Friday with wins over Centralia and Shoreline, which the Pirates will play twice more this season in NWAACC North Division play.
It’s no surprise Bazile’s best statistical outing of the weekend came Sunday against the Dolphins (3-7), who run fast and shoot faster.
Peninsula attempted 91 field goals in the game, while Shoreline jacked up 110 shots. By comparison, the Pirates had 73 shot attempts against Columbia Basin and 71 against Centralia.
Bazile had 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He shot 9 for 22 on field goals and 8 for 11 at the free-throw line.
Four other Pirates reached double figures: Geno Horsley had 15 points, Markus Rawls had 13 and a team-high nine rebounds, Tyler McKinney had 12 and Johntrel Lee finished with 10 points.
Starting point guard Erron Shamlin led Peninsula with five assists and three steals.
Against Centralia on Saturday, the Pirates outscored the Trailblazers by 14 points in the second half to win 74-64.
Bazile scored 18 points and had another seven-rebound game.
McKinney scored 13 and Horsley came off the bench to score 12.
Peninsula was outrebounded by four, but scored 15 second-chance points while holding Centralia to five.
The Pirates’ bench outscored Centralia’s 29-16.
With only one loss on the season, the Peninsula men (5-1) sit atop the North Division standings.
The Pirates return to action Friday against Wenatchee Valley (4-6) at the three-day Big Bend Holiday Classic in Moses Lake.
Women’s Basketball
Pirates finish fifth at Clark Crossover
VANCOUVER, Wash. — After opening the Clark Crossover with a win over Mount Hood, Peninsula proceed to drop its next two games against Clark and Clackamas.
Port Angeles High School graduate Alison Knowles was hot from behind the arc in Sunday’s game against Clackamas (11-2), sinking 6 of 7 en route to a game-high 23 points.
Knowles was selected to the all-tournament team after averaging 16.3 points over the three days.
Freshman Gabi Fenumiai notched her third double-double in as many days with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and fellow frosh Madison Pilster had her second double-double of the Crossover with 10 points and 12 boards.
Fenumiai averaged 12.6 points and 14.6 rebounds at the tournament. She leads the NWAACC in rebounding with 13.5 per game. Southwestern Oregon’s Aminata Cole is second more than two rebounds per game behind Fenumiai with 11.43.
The Pirates shot 8 for 11 on 3-pointers, but made only 12 of their 47 field goals from inside the arc.
Peninsula also committed 27 turnovers in Sunday’s game.
The Pirates struggled with ball security throughout the weekend, with 22 turnovers in the loss to Clark and 17 in Friday’s win over Mount Hood.
Peninsula opened Saturday’s game against Clark scoring the first 10 points of the game, but was outscored 45-9 over the remainder of the first half by the host Penguins.
Pilster and Fenumiai led the Pirates with 11 points each. Knowles added eight and Olivia Henderson scored a season-high seven.
Peninsula (3-7) returns to action Saturday, Jan. 4, against Whatcom (4-4) to open NWAACC North Division play.
The Pirates’ nonregion record is somewhat misleading. Not only have the yet to play a home game, but their six of their seven losses have been to teams with winning records, including two to defending NWAACC champion Lane.
They also had an unfortunate knack for facing the host team at tournaments they participated in.
Macy Walker all-tourney
Former Port Angeles High School standout Macy Walker earned all-tournament honor for helping Olympic to a surprising fourth-place finish at the Southwestern Oregon Crossover in Coos Bay, Ore.
Walker, a freshman, averaged 10.3 points, 4.3 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.6 steals for the Rangers (3-7), who have won three games this season after going winless in 2012-13.
Two of those wins came over the weekend, including an 80-79 win over Everett on Sunday.
In Friday’s loss to the host Lakers, Walker scored 14 points, making 4 of 9 3-pointers, and had four assists, three steals and three blocks.
