SHORELINE — The Peninsula College women’s and men’s basketball teams began the defense of their 2016 Northwest Athletic Conference North Division championships with a sweep at Shoreline on Wednesday. The Pirate women rolled to an 80-61 win over the Dolphins and the men followed with a thrilling 116-108 double overtime victory.
The Peninsula women improved to 1-0 in league and 9-5 overall, while the men, who moved into No. 7 on the latest Under Armour NWAC Coaches’ Poll, are 1-0 and 10-3. Both teams travel to Everett Saturday where their games will be featured as “NWAC Games of the Week,” to be live streamed from a link at nwacsports.org.
Tip-off for the women is at 4 p.m. and the men at 6 p.m.
Men Peninsula 116, Shoreline 108, 2OT
The Pirates looked like they might dominate, bolting out to double-digit leads throughout the first half, but Shoreline responded, closing the gap to 39-34 at halftime and then outscoring the Pirates 49-44 in the second half to send the game into overtime.
The PC men had a chance to win it in regulation, as Darrion Daniels made great play, driving to the hoop in traffic, but his layup didn’t go down.
The Pirates also had a chance to win at the end of the first overtime when Omar Lo tipped the ball in off an inbounds play with four seconds remaining, but Shoreline went the length of the floor, a foul was called, and Derrik Dean hit both free throws to force a second OT.
Peninsula poured in 33 points to outscore the Dolphins in what proved to be two wild five-minute overtime periods to win by eight, despite fouling out four players.
The PC men finished with five players in double figures, led by Darrion Daniels’ 31 points and seven assists, 20 points and eight rebounds from Kevin Baker, 17 from Omar Lo, 16 from Jalon McCullough and 13 from Sam Velez.
Dana Abe led Shoreline with 35 points, while Anddrew Hawkins and Dean each had 17.
The Pirates shot an impressive 51.9 percent from the floor, while Shoreline also had a good night at 49.3 percent, but it was the three-point shooting that kept the Dolphins in the game. Shoreline connected on 16 of 29 from three-point range, while Peninsula could hit on only seven of 25. The Pirates, however, dominated the boards with 53 rebounds to the Dolphins’ 30.
Women Peninsula 80, Shoreline 61
The Pirates overcame a sluggish start, falling behind Shoreline 11-7 in the first quarter, to outscore the hosts 25-15 in the second for a 32-26 lead at halftime. Some sharp three-point shooting allowed Peninsula some room to breathe in the second half, as the Pirates hit on 8 of 11 from beyond the arc to shoot 73 percent on treys for the night, while Shoreline was one of 6 of 17 percent from long range.
Sephora Yayouss had her shot falling Wednesday, hitting on four of five threes to finish with 20 points to lead the Pirates. Alicia Dugan was 3 for 3 from three-point range and also had a good night with 16 points, Yamilei Rodriguez came off the bench to score 13 points and pull down six rebounds, Anaya Rodisha had 12 and Tai Thomas contributed six points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Enjunay Jones-Lee led all scorers with 29 points for Shoreline and Danielle Hayes added 13.
