PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men and women had a pair of close losses to the Edmonds Tritons, with the men losing in overtime 96-88 and the women falling 74-67.
The losses put both teams’ records at 1-1 in the North Division. For the men the loss snapped a 6-game winning streak. It was the first loss for the Pirates’ men since Dec. 8.
The shame for the men is they fought back from a big deficit late in the second half to force overtime, but the Tritons dominated the overtime period, outscoring the Pirates 17-9 in OT.
The Pirates found themselves in dire straits, down 73-66 with 4:02 left. Jaylin Reed, who scored 28 points for the Pirates, scored seven points in the final 4 minutes, while Everett Torres-Kahapea scored five points in the last three minutes, including a 3-pointer and a basket with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 79-79.
In overtime, the Tritons jumped out to a 87-82 lead, but Marquis Gurske pulled the Pirates to back within two when he hit a 3-pointer with 2:46 left.
However, the Tritons responded with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to open up a 93-85 lead with less than a minute to play, a deficit too big for the Pirates to overcome.
Peninsula was led by Reed, who pulled down 10 boards to go along with his 28 points. Davien Harris-Williams had 17 points and five rebounds, while Gurske and KeAndre Hunter-Holiday each scored 10 points. Malke Moore and Torres-Kahapea each scored nine points.
Peninsula (1-1, 11-3) has an extremely tough game coming up Wednesday against a 15-0 Skagit Valley squad. That games is on the road at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball Edmonds 74, Peninsula 67
The women had one bad quarter, the second, and that was too much to overcome in a seven-point loss to the Tritons.
Edmonds outscored Peninsula 24-15 in the second quarter. For the rest of the game, the Pirates outscored the Tritons 52-50.
Edmonds held a lead at the half of 35-27 at the half and built up the lead to 63-50 with 7½ minutes left in the game when the Pirates roared back on an 11-3 run to make a game of it late.
Sunshine Vicente made a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, while Logan Luke had a bucket and Leilani Padilla and Kayla Johnson each made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 66-61 with 2:30 left in the game. However, that was as close as the Pirates could get as Edmonds shot 4-for-4 on its free throws down the stretch to keep the Pirates at bay.
Padilla led the Pirates with four 3-pointers and 27 points, but she was the only Peninsula player in double figures. Casandra White had eight points and 10 rebounds, while Logan Luke had nine points and six rebounds and Vicente scored eight points.
Johnson had five assists and six rebounds.
Peninsula (1-1, 8-5) next plays at Skagit Valley (0-2, 6-8) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
