MOUNT VERNON — Freshman Ryley Callaghan poured in a game-high 33 points to lift a cold-shooting Peninsula College men’s basketball team to a 66-60 win against Tacoma.
The victory, the Pirates’ (1-1) first on the season, came in Friday’s opening round of the Skagit Valley College Turkey Tournament.
Callaghan, a South Kitsap High School graduate, poured in 11 of 19 shots, including 7 of 11 shooting from beyond the 3-point line to lead a Peninsula team that shot only 36 percent.
He has led the Pirates in scoring in each of the team’s first two contests.
Domach Domach had eight points and six rebounds for Peninsula.
Jeremiah Hobbs had a tough shooting night, going 3 of 13 and scoring seven points for the Pirates, but Hobbs hauled down 11 rebounds to lead each team.
Freshman post Jonah Cook, who played at nearby La Conner High School, had four points, two rebounds and an assist for Peninsula in his return to Skagit County.
The Titans were lead by Tra’Von McCray who put up 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting.
Jake Nelson had 12 points for Tacoma, all of them coming from beyond the arc on 4 of 8 shooting from behind the 3-point line.
The Pirates continued tournament play late Saturday.
Peninsula’s first home game comes in the First Federal Pirate Classic against Centralia at 7 p.m. Saturday.
