DES MOINES — The Peninsula College men’s basketball team got 32 points from Javon Ervin and held on to the final buzzer to beat Highline 77-75 Saturday to even its record to 7-7 on the season.
Ervin hit four 3-pointers and had two baskets in 11 seconds in the final four minutes to help the Pirates win. The game was close throughout the entire second half with neither team having a lead of more than five points.
The Pirates held a 76-72 lead in the waning seconds. Highline’s Isaiah Vargas hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to make it 76-75. Highline fouled quickly and Ervin made one of two free throws with four seconds left to make it 77-75. Highline was able to get a 3-point shot off at the buzzer, but it was no good.
Ervin also had seven rebounds and five assists. Ese Onakpoma had 21 points and seven rebounds, while Miles Lake had eight points and five rebounds. Wyatt Dunning (Port Angeles High School) had seven points and five rebounds.
Peninsula (7-7) opens up North Region action with a home game at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Whatcom (9-5). The Peninsula women, who have not played since Dec. 16 other than a scrimmage against The Evergreen State University, play Whatcom (4-7) at 5 p.m. to end a 25-day break between games.
