PORT ANGELES — Twice the Peninsula men have gone up against one of the NWAC’s juggernauts in Clackamas, and twice the Pirates gave the Cougars everything they could handle.
Clackamas, which is undefeated in NWAC play, won Sunday’s Wilder Pirate Tournament battle 89-82 in what was a back-and-forth affair. There were eight ties and seven lead changes in the game as neither team could ever build up any kind of lead.
Earlier this year, Clackamas beat the Pirates 103-86 in a game that was actually very close until the final couple of minutes.
Davien Harris-Williams led the Pirates with 23 points, while Sequim’s Nate Despain had his best college game, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and scoring 14 points. Everett Rorres-Kahapea had 11 points. Marquis Gurske led the Pirates in rebounds with seven and assists with four.
Peninsula has just two losses so far this season, both to Clackamas, which is 6-0.
In Saturday’s game, the Pirates got a spectacular performance from Harris-Williams in crushing the British Columbia Christian Academy 96-69.
Harris-Williams hit eight 3-pointers and shot 11 for 16 from the field while scoring 35 points, his biggest output of the season. Rorres-Kahapea hit three 3-pointers and scored 19, while Reed had 13 points and Moore 12.
The Pirates hit a total of 14 3-pointers while shooting 48.3 percent (14-29) from beyond the arc.
Port Angeles Roughrider Gabe Long led the Pirates in rebounding with six, while Marquis Gurske had six assists and two steals.
Peninsula (5-1) takes a break for a couple of weeks and next plays Linn-Benton (4-2, from Corvallis, Ore.) in the Grays Harbor Crossover Tournament on Dec. 20.

Women’s basketball Peninsula 78, Pierce 41
STEILACOOM — A day after their worst shooting game of the season, Peninsula’s Leilani Padilla and Casandra White bounced back in a huge way Sunday, leading the Pirates to a 78-41 win over Pierce College at the Pierce Holiday Classic.
Padilla shot 12 for 18 from the field and made five out of seven 3-pointers en route to scoring 31 points. White shot 6 for 14 to score 15 points, while added 12 rebounds. The day before, the duo shot 6-for-33 in a loss at the tournament.
Logan Luke added 14 points as the Pirates opened up a 40-24 lead at the half and never looked back. Kayla Johnson led the Pirates with eight assists.
Peninsula lost two out of three at the Pierce tournament, but those two losses were against defending NWAC champion Wenatchee Valley and Lane Community College, which is 6-1. The Pirates (4-3) next plays Wenatchee Valley (7-2) again Saturday at the Tacoma Crossover Tournament.
