COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula men fall in double-OT thriller

Pirate women remain unbeaten atop North

BELLEVUE — Javon Ervin went off for 30 points, but the Peninsula College men couldn’t pull off a road win against North Region foe Bellevue, falling 91-88 to the Bulldogs in two overtimes.

Bellevue’s Marcus Cole hit the game-tying 3-pointer to send the game to the first overtime and drained a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left in the second OT that would prove to be the game-winning points.

Cole’s freebies put the Bulldogs up 89-86, and Peninsula and Bellevue traded free throws to account for the final score.

Ervin hit 10 of 19 shots from the floor and got to the free-throw line consistently, hitting 10 of 12 from the stripe. He also had four rebounds, two steals and an assist for Peninsula.

Aiden Olmstead added 16 points and nine rebounds, four on the offensive glass, to go along with a pair of steals for the Pirates.

Ese Onakpoma also had 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a steal for Peninsula.

Cole had 24 points to pace Bellevue.

It was the second straight North loss for Peninsula (6-4, 13-11), which now sits in third place.

The Pirates visit Olympic at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Pirate women win

BELLEVUE — Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist led the way for Peninsula with 16 points and dominated the glass to the tune of 22 rebounds, eight offensive, as the Pirates stayed unbeaten in North Region play with a 59-41 win over Bellevue.

Shania Moananu added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for Peninsula (11-0, 18-2).

A 12-3 Bellevue burst out of the locker room put the Bulldogs up 31-27 with 5:14 left in the third quarter, but Peninsula ended the quarter on a 15-2 run, 10 from Julmist, to take a 42-33 lead into the final quarter.

The Pirates visit Olympic at noon Saturday.
