SHORELINE — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up a road doubleheader sweep of Shoreline in Northwest Athletic Conference North Division action.
The Peninsula women held the Dolphins to 18 points in the first half en route to a 70-42 win in Saturday’s opener.
In the second game, the men earned a crucial division win 58-56 to move into a fourth-place tie with Shoreline and
Skagit Valley.
Freshman Jeremiah Hobbs led the Pirates with 17 points, 10 rebounds, including five offensive, four blocks and three assists.
Ryley Callaghan added 16 points, including 3 for 5 from 3-point range, and six rebounds, while Malik Mayeux had six points, 11 rebounds and three assists and Deonte Dixon scored 13 points and grabbed five boards.
Overall, the Pirates out-rebounded the Dolphins 47-33.
Peninsula and Shoreline have had high-scoring showdowns in recent years due to the Dolphins’ uptempo attack under previous coach Greg Turcott.
Shoreline this year has a different approach under new coach Donald Brady, who took over at Shoreline in the offseason after several years as an assistant at Bellevue.
Peninsula and Shoreline are fourth and third, respectively, from the bottom of the NWAC in team scoring. The Pirates average 66.26 points per game and the Dolphins score 66.25 points per game.
Both teams allow 68.9 points per game, which is tied for fourth in the conference behind Bellevue
(65 ppg), Wenatchee Valley (68.7) and Clark (68.7).
Saturday’s game lived up to those figures, with Shoreline leading 25-22 at halftime and Peninsula winning the second half 36-31.
The Pirates (3-4, 10-9) are off until Saturday when they travel to face the North Division’s second-place team, Edmonds (6-1, 18-4), which is ranked third in
the NWAC.
Peninsula lost to the Tritons 64-54 at home last month.

The Dolphins became the latest victim of the Pirates, and the Pirates became the latest team to defeat the winless Dolphins.
The 42 points scored by Shoreline were the fewest allowed by Peninsula, and Saturday was the third time this season the Pirates have won by holding their opponents to less than 50 points.
Sophomore guard Miranda Schmillen paced Peninsula with 18 points, making 2 of 3 shots from 3-point range, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Gabi Fenumiai scored 14 points for the Pirates and pulled down 15 rebounds and had three steals.
Leading scorer Madison Pilster finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Cierra Moss scored 10 points and made 3 of 5 treys.
Imani Smith had four points and a team-high four assists.
The Dolphins actually played Peninsula fairly close in the first half, trailing only 23-18 at intermission. But the Pirates claimed a 47-24 advantage after halftime.
Part of Shoreline’s second-half decline was likely due to fatigue from only using six players — and one of those players, Sidney Truong, only played 1 minute and 19 seconds, meaning that four Dolphins played all 40 minutes and another played 38:41.
Tara Bremer scored 14 points for Shoreline (0-7, 0-15) and Magen Lloyd grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.
The win keeps sixth-ranked Peninsula (6-1, 12-5) in second place in the NWAC North, only one game behind Bellevue (7-0, 16-6).
The Pirates return to action this Saturday on the road against Edmonds (1-6, 2-16).
Peninsula earned its largest margin of victory against the Tritons last month, winning 106-45.
