PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College basketball men held a seven-point lead halfway through the second half in their home opener against Everett but the Trojans went on a 20-4 run to seize control of the game en route to a 93-79 win.
Meanwhile, the Peninsula women also fell to Everett 48-43.
The Pirates were down 46-41 at the end of the first half and came out hot in the second half, going on a 23-11 run over the next 8½ minutes to take a 64-57 lead. Vince McFarland, who led the Pirates with 24 points in just 20 minutes off the bench, led the rally with a pair of 3-pointers and eight points during that stretch.
Coach Donald Rollman said McFarland, a 6-foot-7 player out of Boise, Idaho, didn’t have a good first game, but bounced back against Everett with some spectacular numbers. “He was showing us what he can do when we get the ball to him in the right spots.”
But the Pirates were only able to score four points over the next six minutes as the Trojans got up 77-68.
The Pirates rallied and were able to cut it to 79-73 as McFarland scored five straight points. But after McFarland’s layup cut the Everett lead to six with 4:05 left, a 6-0 run by the Trojans put the game out of reach and the Pirates were never able to seriously threaten again.
Rollman said the game had a number of big runs by each team.
“We didn’t shoot particularly well. Our shot selection wasn’t great,” Rollman said.
McFarland shot 10-for-11 (91 percent) from the floor for his 24 points. Jaylin Reed, one of the five remaining Pirates from 2019-2020, scored 16, but shot just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc. Isaiah Sampson scored 15 with six rebounds and Ty Artis scored 10. KeAndre Hunter-Holiday hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points.

Women’s game
Peninsula’s Keeli-Jade Smith scored 19 points for the Pirates, but Peninsula had trouble finding scoring from other sources as no other player was able to score more than six points. Smith shot 9-for-19 from the floor and had seven rebounds.
Coach Allison Crumb said her team, with only one holdover from the 2019-2020 season, had some jitters but played hard.
“It was pretty sloppy. The women were pretty nervous, but it was a hard-fought game,” coach Allison Crumb said. “We need to be more consistent.”
Sequim’s Hope Glasser scored two points and added five rebounds and three steals.
“We need to find her. We need to get her more involved offensively,” Crumb said.
The Peninsula men and women travel to Edmonds on Wednesday. The Pirates women play at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m. The squads return home Saturday to host Bellevue with the women’s game beginning at 2 p.m. and the men’s game at 4 p.m.
