VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team opened the Clark Crossover Tournament with a 67-59 win over Mount Hood thanks to a record-setting rebounding game by Gabi Fenumiai.
Fenumiai, a freshman from Juneau, Alaska, pulled down 23 rebounds for the Pirates on Friday to break teammate Madison Pilster’s school record of 21 rebounds set last month.
Twelve of Fenumiai’s rebounds came off the offensive glass. She also scored 17 points, trailing only Alison Knowles, who had 18, for the team high.
Pilster had a solid effort on the glass as well, grabbing 12 boards (six offensive) and scoring 16 points.
Guard Pherrari Brumbaugh grabbed nine rebounds (five offensive) and dished out a team-high four assists.
Peninsula scored 21 second-half points and limited the Saints (1-8) to 10.
With the win, the Pirates (3-5) guaranteed themselves at least a fourth-place finish in the Clark Crossover.
Men’s Basketball
Columbia Basin 78, Peninsula 75
TACOMA — Xavier Bazile scored a team-high 22 points, but the Pirates lost to the Hawks in his season debut at the Tacoma Crossover Tournament.
It was Peninsula’s first loss of the season.
Bazile, the Pirates’ leading scorer in 2012-13, made 9 of 19 field-goal attempts in his return to action, including 2 of 6 3-pointers.
Bazile played 29 minutes and 59 seconds, which was second on the team to Marcus Rawls’ 31:19.
Tyler McKinney had another hot-shooting night, sinking all five of his 3-point attempts and 8 of 10 shots for 21 points.
Peninsula only shot eight free throws, making three, while Columbia Basin (3-4) shot 30 and made 25.
On Saturday, the Pirates (4-1) beat Centralia 74-64 to advance to the Tacoma Crossover fifth-place game against Shoreline.
