SEQUIM — The Integrity Pump team of Jeff James, Josh Milam, Garrett Smithson and Chad Sanek, along with Huskies celebrity Lincoln Kennedy, beat 35 other teams to win the 14th annual Sonny Sixkiller UW Husky Celebrity Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto Center at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course this weekend.
The event raised a record net $101,500 for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation — the tournament’s beneficiary and the organizer of the tournament along with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and Cedars at Dungeness.
The OSP Sling team of Todd and Jordan Negas, Chad Wagner and Bill Evensted, with UW celebrity Hans Woldseth, finished second in Friday’s tournament. The PA Warehouse team of Sam Luce, Danny Romero, Dale Shoftsall, Trevor Benjamin and UW celebrity Todd Johnson placed third, while the Peninsula Bottling Company team of Riley Shea, Brady Bradshaw, Brad and Brian Meek and celebrity Ed Cribby finished fourth.
Kennedy was a unanimous All-American on the UW undefeated 1991 Huskies national championship football team, and had a 11-year pro career with the Oakland Raiders and the Atlanta Falcons after being the ninth pick in the NFL draft. He now works on the Raiders radio broadcast in Las Vegas.
Woldseth was a defensive back for UW’s 1972-1973 teams, and is currently is a PGA Associate at Tacoma’s Lake Spanaway Golf Course. Johnson, a linebacker, went from being a walk-on to the team’s leading tackler in his senior season in 1998. Cribby was a Huskies baseball star from 1974-77.
Each of the 36 foursomes were joined by a Huskies celebrity. Sixkiller, who led the nation in passing in 1970, recruited all of the celebrities, which included several Huskies and NFL greats, including former Miami Dolphins quarterback Damon Huard and Seattle media personality Mike Gastineau.
Also playing were five former University of Washington stars who graduated from Sequim and Port Angeles High Schools. A 1984 graduate of PAHS, Scott Jones is the only Roughrider to play in the NFL. Former Roughrider Matt Lane was the starting catcher for the Huskies from 2004-2006, Sequim High grad Derrin Doty starred for the Huskies baseball team from 1990-1993, while former Roughrider Brandon Irvine pitched for the Husky baseball team from 1994-1997.
PAHS football and basketball standout Bernie Fryer, who was recruited by the UW for both sports and played for the Huskies hoops team from 1968-1969, also played in the tournament. The only PAHS graduate to play in the NBA, he went on to a standout playing and officiating career in the NBA.
