CROWNING CHAMPS AND attending camps help make summer golf memorable.
North Olympic Peninsula golfers have done well for themselves in recent tournaments around Western Washington, and summer camps are in the works at some area courses.
Port Townsend Golf Club’s Zackari Glover claimed the Kitsap Amateur golf tournament’s overall net title in temperatures as high as 96 degrees over the weekend at Kitsap Golf & Country Club in Chico (between Silverdale and Bremerton). Glover shot rounds of 79 and 78 for a net score of 70 and 69.
He is a former Port Townsend High School golfer and the stepson of Port Townsend Golf Club head pro/general manager Gabriel Tonan.

Meanwhile, Sequim’s rising sophomore Paul Jacobsen played well last week at a U.S. Junior Amateur Championship Qualifier at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway.
Jacobsen shot a 4-over-par 76 to finish five strokes out of first place and three shots out of a playoff for the northwest’s final two spots at the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan.
That’s a great showing for a golfer with tons of future potential.
Speaking of amateur championships, Sunland Golf & Country Club will host a pair of these events in late September.
The Washington State Golf Association’s Men’s Amateur (55 and older) and Super Senior Men’s Amateur (65 and older) will be held at Sunland Sept. 27-29.
The entry fee is $200 and registration is due Sept. 6.

Cedars golf camp
As for summer golf camps, Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim is accepting registration for its camp Monday through Wednesday, July 24-26.
There will be sessions for children ages 5 through 9 and 10 through 16.
The younger kids will attend camp from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 24-25 and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 26.
The older kids will camp from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 24-25 and 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. July 26.
Cedars staffers will rotate between teaching putting, chipping, full swing and etiquette on the first two days of camp.
The last day will see a five-hole tournament and a pizza party and awards ceremony will follow play.
The cost for the camp is $80.

Stars and stripes
The annual Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament will be held at SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday.
This is a two-person, three-format, 27-hole event with space for 28 teams.
A 9 a.m. shotgun start will open play with golfers playing a better ball format on the front nine layout from the green tees.
Teams will switch to scramble play for the second nine on the back nine, also from the green tees.
And players will finish off with nine holes of alternate shot from the back nine’s silver tees.
Cost is $45 per person, $90 per team and includes golf, range balls, food, KPs and a long putt competition. A honey pot is an extra $20 per person and power carts are $15 per seat.

PT Independence Day
Port Townsend Golf Club will hold its annual Independence Day Tournament on Saturday, July 8.
Two-person teams will play nine holes of best ball and nine holes of Chapman with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Sign up for Amateur
The Clallam County Amateur, a three-day, three-round, three-course tournament to crown the county’s top nonprofessional golfer, will be held Friday through Sunday, July 7-9.
The North Olympic Peninsula’s top amateur golfers will open play with 11 a.m. tee times at Peninsula Golf Club in Port Angeles.
Saturday’s play moves to the Dungeness Valley for a 9 a.m. round at Sunland Golf & Country Club.
And the final round will tee things up at 8 a.m. at Cedars at Dungeness.
The tournament is open to any amateur golfer with a USGA Handicap.
The entry fee is $110 per person, $90 for members of any of the three clubs.
It includes three rounds of golf, range balls and a championship-round meal Sunday.
Golfers will play 54 holes of medal play in three amateur divisions.
A total of $3,500 in prizes, including $1,500 from sponsors will be up for grabs.
Players also will be shooting for $5,000 hole-in-one prizes each day and $3,000 in raffle prizes will be given away during the tournament.
The entry deadline is Monday.
