BOYS TENNIS: Basden/Flodstrom doubles duo reaches Olympic League Championship match

5 Riders heading to district meet

POULSBO — Port Angeles enjoyed a successful couple of days at the Olympic League Boys Tennis Tournament at North Kitsap High School, sending one doubles team to the tourney final, another to the third-place match, while also qualifying another singles player to the West Central District Tournament next weekend.

“I am really proud of this entire team,” said coach Brian Gundersen. “The guys moving on played some of their best tennis in the biggest moments and next weekend is going to be fun.”

The Roughriders top doubles duo of Luke Flodstrom and Nathan Basden worked themselves into the championship match against Grady DeVries and Spencer Gillespie of North Kitsap and lost a three-set thriller, 6-2, 2-6, 3-6 to finish second and earn a first-round bye at the district tournament

Port Angeles’ Austin Worthington and Keatyn Hoch also advanced after earning a fourth-place finish.

Worthington and Hoch went 2-0 on day 1 and ended up playing in the match for 3rd and 4th, coming up just short to another North Kitsap team.

Advancing from the loaded singles bracket for Port Angeles is Tate Alton, who finished sixth.

Alton put a scare into eventual 2nd place finisher Joseph Cao of Bremerton earlier in the tournament, losing in three sets, but rebounded and will be playing next weekend at the Kitsap Athletic Center.
