BOYS SWIMMING: Sequim’s Ellefson district champion in 200 freestyle

BREMERTON — Sequim’s Colby Ellefson is a bidistrict champion in the 200-yard freestyle.

And he won by a microsecond.

Ellefson, who swam for the Port Angeles swim team all year, is now competing for Sequim in the postseason. After winning the preliminary heat this weekend of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.81 seconds, Ellefson did better in the finals, winning with a time of 1:54.59. He won by an incredibly close margin over Josh VanHuis of Kingston, who touched in at 1:54.62, just 0.03 of a second behind Ellefson.

Ellefson, a one-man team for Sequim, will also move on the state 1A/2A swim meet in the 500-yard freestyle, as he finished second in 5:18.91. Port Angeles freshman Thomas Jones finished a solid third at 5:24. VanHuis won this race.

Port Angeles’ best finish was turned in by Finn Thompson, who came in second in the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.21.

The Port Angeles 200 freestyle relay team, which featured Ellefson in the regular season but could not in the postseason, came in fourth. The quartet of Nolan Medgin, Edward Gillespie, Thompson and Jones finished with a time of 1:39.94.

The Port Angeles team of Thompson, Medgin, Jones and Gillespie was also sixth in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:56.04. The same four swimmers finished seventh in the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:46.07.

Medgin also picked up a top 10 finish in the 100 breaststroke, coming in 10th with a time of 1:09.16. Gillespie came in 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:10.63.

Port Angeles finished eighth at district with 83 points while Sequim finished 12th with 29. Sammamish won the district championship with 295 points.

The state 1A/2A swim meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way will begin Thursday and go through Saturday.
