PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles found competition for the first time this season but didn’t blink, knocking off Shelton 94-75 in a nonleague boys swim meet Tuesday at Shore Aquatic Center.
Colby Ellefson emerged as a standout performer in the 200-yard freestyle, seizing the first of three victories by a commanding 23 seconds ahead of Shelton’s second-place swimmer.
Ellefson’s performance, along with teammates Charlie Kasten and Killian Waknitz, who touched in third and fourth, respectively, added 11 crucial points to the Roughriders’ tally, putting Port Angeles in the lead by four points.
In the 200 individual medley, Thomas Jones, Edward Gillespie and Eli Warren all achieved personal bests. Jones secured second place with an improvement of more than 13 seconds.
Port Angeles continued its winning streak in the 50 free, with Isaac Meek claiming victory and Jack Root battling for second, edging out Shelton’s third-place finisher by a mere 0.01 seconds.
The 100 free witnessed Nolan Medgin in second place and Meek in third, both swimmers achieving season-best times with improvements of more than three seconds.
Ellefson maintained his dominance in the 500 free, finishing 28 seconds ahead of the competition. Jensen Wolfe and Kasten made their season debuts in the event and finished third and fourth, respectively.
The 200 free relay team of Jones, Medgin, Gillespie and Ellefson nabbed the only first place in relay events for Port Angeles.
The quartet grabbed eight points, and the Roughriders surged ahead, leading by 25 points.
Wolfe showcased his skill in the 100 backstroke, earning second with a personal-best time.
And in the 100 breaststroke, Medgin continued the Roughriders’ strong showing with a second-place finish and a personal best.
Port Angeles (3-0) swims at powerhouse Bainbridge on Jan. 5.
