PORT TOWNSEND — Sequim scored three first-half goals to defeat Port Townsend 4-2 in Olympic League soccer action at Memorial Field.
“I think this was our best game,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said of Tuesday’s match.
Three minutes into the game, Sequim’s Thomas Winfield scored off an Adrian Espinoza throw-in to put the Redskins on their heels early.
Brandon Payne added to the Wolves’ lead in the 21st minute when he capitalized on a cross from forward Ron Welches.
Port Townsend finally reached the scoreboard with three minutes to play in the first half.
Junior midfielder Conner Chisick carried a long run up the wing into the Wolves’ box where he was taken down by a Sequim defender prior to shooting.
Port Townsend captain Max Meier then converted the ensuing penalty kick to make the score 2-1.
Sequim scored again right before the half on a goal by Nicholas Baird that was set up by Eli Berg.
“Excellent defensive play by senior Micah Evalt and juniors Shiloh Lanphear and Colin Coker kept [us] in the hunt throughout the second half,” Redskins coach Steve Shively said.
“Changing [our] formation to a 4-3-3 placed more shooters up top, thanks to the impressive debut of senior Carl Delaire, joining sophomore Beshir Little, and Meier.”
The scored remained 3-1 until Sequim added to its lead with a goal by Lijah Sanford, who was playing his first game of the season. Baird assisted on the goal.
The Redskins continued to compete into stoppage time when Evalt passed to Meier, who crossed a hard shot toward the far post.
The shot was cleared by a Sequim defender into his own goal to make the final score 4-2.
The Wolves (3-2) are off until after spring break. They return to action Tuesday, April 8, at North Mason.
The Redskins play at North Mason (1-4) today.
Many Port Townsend (1-3) seniors are traveling to Washington, D.C., on a school-sponsored Sustainability Awareness Campaign, which will provide a number of freshmen the opportunity to be called up to the varsity team for today’s game.

PORT ANGELES — The league-leading Vikings pulled away late in Tuesday’s match at Civic Field.
The Roughriders came back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to make the game close, only to give up soft goals shortly afterward.
Port Angeles’ Tim Schneider redirected a free kick by Vincent Ioffrida for a goal in the 35th minute to decrease the deficit to 2-1, but North Kitsap’s Brian Duran scored in the last minute of the half to make it 3-1 at intermission.
Six minutes into the second half, the Riders made it 3-2 when a left-footed cross by Agustin Muller headed in by freshman forward Jesse Salgado for the first varsity goal of his career.
A minute later, though, the Vikings scored again to regain their two-goal advantage.
Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said that his team’s best passing game of the season was undone by too many defensive mistakes.
North Kitsap (4-0) added a pair of insurance goals to balloon its lead to 6-2.
Schneider and Salgado were named offensive players of the match by Saari. Tristen Isset and Ioffrida shared the defensive honors and Muller and Wei-Yan Fu were the transition players of the match.
Port Angeles (3-2) plays at Kingston (3-1) today.
North Kitsap won Tuesday’s JV game 4-0.
