POULSBO — And on the third game in five days, the Port Angeles Roughriders lost a close one to North Kitsap 1-0 on Saturday in the District 2/3 boys soccer tournament.
The loss eliminates Port Angeles from the postseason one win short of making its first Class 2A state tournament appearance since 2012.
The Vikings, playing on their home field, scored the match’s only goal in the 47th minute. Ryan Nelson received a through-ball and beat Riders goalkeeper Keenan Leslie to the far post.
Desperate to tally the equalizer, Port Angeles sent an extra forward up midway through the first half but was unable to score.
The Riders finish the season with an 11-7-1 record, which includes winning two of three postseason games.
“It was a successful season for [us] overall, but the team had higher hopes for the postseason,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.
“North Kitsap deserves credit. They passed and possessed the ball well throughout the match. Vikings goalkeeper Jordan Thompson was solid in the game and recorded the shutout.”
Scott Methner and Wei-Yan Fu, respectively, were selected by Saari as Port Angeles’ defensive and transition players of the match.
The Riders finished fourth in Olympic League 2A. They bid farewell to nine seniors and seven starters.
Port Angeles 3, Orting 2, OT
BONNEY LAKE — Lukas Mobius scored a game-tying goal in stoppage time in regulation and then the game-winner in overtime as Port Roughriders edged the Cardinals in a District 2/3 boys soccer loser-out contest.
“Erasing years of postseason overtime frustrations, [we] knocked off the No. 2 seed from the South Puget Sound League in a barn burner of a game,” Roughriders coach Chris Saari said of Thursday’s game at Bonney Lake High School.
“[We] controlled early play and created several good chances but couldn’t find the net.”
One such opportunity turned into a goal for the Cardinals.
Andrew St. George dribbled past the Orting goalkeeper in the 18th minute, but his shot hit the post.
The Cardinals countered, and Isaac Andrade scored from long distance on what was Orting’s first shot of the game.
“The goal came against the run of the play, and [we] played catch-up until the 57th minute when Ben Schneider took a pass from Lukas Mobius and finished to the far post,” Saari said.
Saari said Orting came out stronger in the second half.
“That pressure resulted in another go-ahead goal by Isaac Andrade in the 71st minute,” Saari said.
The Cardinals also hit the post in the second half, only to have the ball cleared away by the Riders’ Scott Methner on the rebound.
Trailing late in stoppage time, Port Angeles’ Kenny Soule fired a long throw into the Cardinal penalty box with less than a minute left.
“The loose ball bounced around and Spencer Beverford-Stewart touched it to Lukas Mobius, who somehow found the net for [us] with 10 seconds left,” Saari said.
Mobius’ equalizer in the 84th minute sent the game to overtime. Mobius got the golden goal in the second minute of the first sudden death period.
“It was pandemonium,” Saari said. “Uproar. Coaches and players rushed the field in a cathartic epic celebration.”
Saari selected Mobius as his offensive player of the match.
Wei-Yan Fu was picked as the defensive player of the game for Port Angeles, and Soule and Ben Schneider were praised for their work in transition.
Foster 3, Sequim 1
BONNEY LAKE — The Wolves’ season came to a close in the District 2/3 Tournament with a loss to the Bulldogs.
Sequim was unable to capitalize on several chances early in Thursday’s match.
A Cameron Chase shot hit the post, a header by Thomas Winfield missed the mark, and another header by Konnor Parrish off of a corner kick was off-target in the first 10 minutes.
The game was scoreless at halftime.
“We pretty much controlled the play in the first half, so we felt pretty good,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.
“I must have given one of my patented terrible halftime speeches. The kids came out pretty flat and a little disjointed in the second half.”
Foster’s Jose Esquivel scored on a run up the right side in the 47th minute.
Esquivel added another goal in the 63rd minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
“A really nice spin move and a shot from about 20 yards that [Sequim goalkeeper] Austin [Wagner] just got a hand on,” Brasher said.
With the Wolves pressing up offensively, Foster added an insurance goal in the 70th minute.
Sequim’s Hayden James scored off an assist from Winfield in the 78th minute, but the deficit was too steep to overcome.
“It was a great season. Second place in the Olympic League,” Brasher said.
“Just couldn’t get it done. [We were] a little flat, it was a hot, there’s a million excuses I could put out there, but I’m just proud of these kids. We’re losing some great seniors.”
The Wolves finish the season with an 11-6-0 record.
