PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend got the better of Forks, scoring four second-half goals in a 4-0 nonleague boys soccer match at Memorial Field on Tuesday.
The two Class 1A teams have met for the past three seasons.
“We figured it was going to be kind of a tight game,” Redhawks coach Rob Cantley said. “We had played them the last couple of years, saw they had lots of speed especially through midfield and up front, so we knew we had to be on our toes due to that speed.”
Cantley came away impressed with how his team performed.
“We played our game almost exactly to our satisfaction,” he said. “How we played the ball, moved it, kept possession and defended. We limited them to three shots on goal, three saves for [goalkeeper] Nico [Winegar] and three shots off-target.”
Port Townsend and Forks were tied 0-0 at halftime, but Cantley said his team had the run of play and could have put a couple of shots in the net.
“Finishing our scoring chances with a higher rate of success is something we will continue to work on,” Cantley said.
The Redhawks earned an early penalty kick in the second half but Forks goalkeeper Gabriel Terrones “did well to save the shot,” Cantley said. “Their goalie had an outstanding game and kept them in the game.”
Port Townsend broke through in the 47th minute when Ben Mattern scored a headed goal off of a long throw-in by Silas DeWyse.
“After we scored is when we really started to get control of the game,” Cantley said.
“Ten minutes later Kuba Krol put in another headed goal thanks to a really fine assist by Zach Dempsey, a really nice cross.”
Mattern added his second goal on a solo run through the Spartan defense in the 69th.
And Mattern completed the hat trick in the final minute, scoring off of an assist by Roland Donanberg-Platt assist.
“We are a little past the halfway point of the season and we have been fine tuning our formations and getting players in their strongest positions, getting that balance right,” Cantley said. “We are playing pretty good ball and enjoying how the boys are taking to the game.”
Port Townsend (2-2-0, 4-3-1) visits Olympic on Friday.
Forks (5-1-0, 6-3-0) hosts Hoquiam (5-2-0, 6-4-0) at 6 p.m. tonight. A Spartans’ win will let Forks keep pace with league-leading Montesano (6-1-0, 6-5-0).
Port Angeles 2, Klahowya 0
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders took advantage of first half scoring opportunities in their first game at the Eagles’ new on-campus turf field and earned a nonleague win Tuesday.
Port Angeles scored in the 13th and 16th minutes.
“It was the Austin Fischer to Stuart Methner connection that struck twice to put Port Angeles in control on the scoreboard,” head coach Chris Saari said. “Austin found Stuart with a short ball in behind the Eagle defense centrally and Stuart’s shot was well placed with the inside of his foot.
“Three minutes later the duo struck again. This time Austin whipped in a left footed cross from the left side. Stuart attacked the ball letting it bounce once and then heading it downward to the side of the Eagle goalie for the brace.”
Saari had praise for Gabe Long and Hollund Bailey.
“Gabe Long had his best game of the season winning battles in central midfield and distributing the ball very well,” Saari said. “Hollund Bailey was key for PA in the central defense. He went hard to the ball and won a lot of headballs and tackles and used his pace to track down a lot of loose balls at the back.”
Bailey, along with goalkeepers Josh Boe and Logan Brown, were named as Saari’s defensive players of the match.
“[We] were able to shutout the Eagles with Josh Boe and Logan Brown each playing a half in goal,” Saari said. “Boe came up with a big kick save late in the first half on a one-on-one that kept Klahowya off the board.
It was the Riders’ (6-2-0, 8-2-0) seventh shutout of the season in 10 games.
Saari tabbed Stuart Methner as his offensive player of the match and Long and Fischer as transition players of the match.
Port Angeles hosts North Mason on Friday at 6:45 p.m. at Peninsula College.
Sequim 8, Olympic 0
SEQUIM — Sean Weber’s header goal inside of the first minute was a sign of more scores to come for the Wolves in a shutout win over the Trojans.
Sequim rallied late to beat Olympic 2-1 earlier this season and Wolves coach Dave Brasher said the thought that played into his team’s performance this time around.
“I think that was part of it,” Brasher said. “We wanted to kind of show that was an aberration.”
Ryan Tolberd tallied a hat trick and Mathys Tanche scored twice as each player reached double-digits in goals scored on the season (10).
Eli Gish had a goal and Spanish exchange student Rodrigo Silva-Carrasco had the Wolves’ final goal — on his birthday.
“Rodrigo was man of the match for us,” Brasher said. “It was Rodrigo’s birthday, he scored a goal and also had an assist for us.”
Brasher said Adrian Funston had a pair of assists, Keith Willwert notched an assist off the bench, Christian Gonzalez played well and freshman Ethan Knight was solid up front while playing most of the second half.
First-place Sequim (9-0-0, 9-0-2) visits third-place North Kitsap (5-3-0, 5-4-1) on Friday.
