BOYS SOCCER: Port Angeles shut out in season opener

Peninsula Daily News

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles soccer boys ran into a hot goalkeeper in their opener, losing their first game of the year 4-0 to Franklin Pierce.

Pierce scored in the 12th and 16th minutes to take a 2-0 lead into the half. The Cardinals scored in the 48th and 58th minutes in the second half.

“[Port Angeles] created multiple good chances throughout the match, but were unable to capitalize in part because of some good saves from the Cardinals goalie,” said coach Chris Saari.

Saari said Port Angeles had a close call in the first half, when Stuart Methner played a ball across the middle to Grayson Peet, whose shot was tipped over the crossbar by the Cardinals’ goalie.

“Andrew St. George had a strong left footed shot saved in the second half and Stuart Methner elevated on a corner kick to head the ball on goal only to have the Cardinal goalie make the save again,” Saari said.

Saari said Hollund Bailey was Port Angeles’ defensive player of the match, while Methner and Peet were the Roughriders’ transition players of the match.

“The Riders allowed some softer goals and need to tighten things up defensively going forward. [The Roughriders] left the game knowing that they played a tough opponent and need to correct their mistakes, but also had a lot of positives to build upon in early season action,” Saari said.

Port Angeles and Pierce each ended with eight shots. Port Angeles had nine corner kicks and Pierce four.
