SEQUIM — Keenan Green and Lars Wiker led Sequim with outside shooting as the Wolves picked up their first Olympic League boys basketball victory, a 70-56 win over North Mason.
“The team played well,” coach Craig Brooks said. “North Mason came out strong and scored 21 points in the first quarter. We outscored them over the next three quarters and shot 47 percent [on 3-point shots] in the second half. The most impressive stat was 24 assists on 28 made field goals. We can be dangerous when we look to find open teammates.”
Green knocked down four triples, shooting 8-of-17 overall to account for 22 points along with five assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Wiker chipped in with 3-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc, scoring 15 points with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Charlie Grider added 10 points and Zeke Schmadeke nine for the Wolves.
Sequim also split a pair of winter break contests last week, besting Class 1A Overlake 52-47 at Meridian High School in Laurel and falling at 2A Bellingham 69-57 Saturday.
Four Wolves reached double figures in scoring against Overlake with Schmadeke and Green leading the team with 13 points apiece, while Ethan Melnick and Solomon Sheppard each posted 10.
Green had 27 points for Sequim against Bellingham, while Sheppard and Melnick each had 10.
Sequim (1-3, 5-4) visits Kingston (1-3, 3-7) on Friday.
Port Angeles 74, Bainbridge 67
BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders took control of a tight Olympic League road affair late, getting big-play contributions from a host of players down the stretch to turn the tide against the Spartans.
“Bainbridge is really, really good,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said. “They are an older, experienced team that passes the ball well, finishes well and they’ve been playing together for so long. They’d be a state tourney team in Class 2A.”
The Spartans were able to find space inside consistently on the back side of the Riders’ zone defense.
“And we weren’t that good defensively,” Ulin said. “Our rim protection was poor and our help rotations were late. They made 14 shots at the rim.”
Port Angeles trailed 65-60 with 3:05 to play before rallying.
“But we just stayed as composed as we could, kept being aggressive offensively, kept sharing the ball, switched some defenses, man to zone to a different zone and we got a huge steal and layup by Kason [Albaugh] and we were able to string some stops together and come out with a really, gritty tough and important road victory.”
Nickerson had 35 points to lead all scorers in an efficient night from the floor, drawing contact and fouls on many shot attempts.
“He only took 14 shots,” Ulin said. “He hit six 3s, 11 free throws and had six steals defensively.”
Dallas Dunning also stepped up with eight points and nine rebounds.
“Dallas was good on the glass for us,” Ulin said. Isaiah Shamp added 16 points.
The Riders (3-2, 7-3) visit North Kitsap (4-0, 4-1) on Friday.
