SEQUIM — Even without arguable the best player in Class 2A in Seattle Pacific-bound Jonas La Tour, North Kitsap is a formidable foe.
That lesson was reinforced Thursday as Sequim battled, but ultimately came up wide of the mark in a 78-40 loss to the Associated Press No. 1-ranked Vikings.
North Kitsap also boasts University of Dallas-bound Johny Olmstead who led all scorers with 27.
And the Vikings also have a sophomore point guard, Cade Orness, who also appears bound for a college hoops career. Orness had 23 in Thursday’s game.
“They were without Jonas La Tour, but they are still very good,” Wolves coach Greg Glasser said. “We got to within 15 [points] in the third quarter, but turnovers and their easy transition baskets did us in.”
Isaiah Moore led the Wolves with 15 points. Pryce Glasser had 14 on the night.
Sequim (2-5, 3-8) is scheduled to host Kingston on Thursday.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders were more than ready for their first home game in nearly two months dispatching the Trojans thanks to a huge night from Wyatt Dunning and Quanah Wheeler.
“Wyatt was unbelievable,” coach Kasey Ulin said. “[He had] 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals in three quarters. Wyatt was the best player in the state of Washington [Thursday]. When he brings that aggressiveness, energy defensively and is looking to shoot the ball, watch out.”
Wheeler also excelled at point guard.
“Quanah was really good, he had 20 points, nine assists and only one turnover,” Ulin said. “He has unbelievable vision and passing ability.”
Tyler Hunter started for an injured John Vaara in the post and his defense and outlet passing led to Port Angeles points.
“Six blocks, six steals and some unbelievable outlet passes that led to baskets or set people up for makes,” Ulin said.
Jeremiah Hall also stood out, grabbing nine rebounds and playing with his usual high effort, intensity and competitiveness, Ulin said.
Port Angeles’ (6-0, 7-3) long-awaited matchup with No. 1 North Kitsap (Port Angeles is ranked No. 8) has been pushed back to Feb. 10 after some COVID cases with the Vikings. The Riders are scheduled to host Bainbridge on Tuesday.

CLALLAM BAY — A six-man Loggers team scrapped out a victory over a hungry Bruins squad.
“We focused on getting the ball inside and we were able to consistently swing the ball and get it to the rim, whether feeding our post player Conner Ferro-May or hitting cutters along the baseline,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said.
Ferro-May had 24 points and Brayden Emery added 19 to pace the Loggers.
“I’m proud of the guys that I had tonight — we are down a bunch of guys due to vacations and COVID and guys just not showing up. The six that came, came to play, and it was exciting to see some younger guys step up,” Ferrier said.
“Dom Sprague moved over to the primary ballhandler as a freshman and got us where we needed to be. Terrell Emery had a really solid game and Henry Bourm and Cole Grooms played so hard on defense and rebounding. Brayden Emery is really starting to let the game come to him and is really starting to thrive. Clallam Bay is always a tough gym to play in and some of these kids hadn’t experienced it yet and we got better as a result of it.”
Crescent (2-0, 7-3) is scheduled to host Neah Bay on Tuesday.

ILWACO — The Fishermen, ranked No. 4 in the WIAA Class 2B RPI, held down the Spartans on Thursday night.
“Ilwaco only has one loss and I think they are head and shoulders the best team in the league,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
“They have a lot of length, they have a 6’6”guy and a 6’4” guy and they make shots tough. We didn’t shoot particularly well, only 15 of 55.”
Logan Olson led the Spartans with 17 points.
Forks (6-3, 7-7) is scheduled to host Neah Bay on Monday.
