BOYS BASKETBALL: Sequim advances by eliminating North Mason from district tournament

TACOMA — The Sequim Wolves defeated the Bulldogs for the second time in three tries this season to earn their way to the second week of the Class 2A District 2/3 boys basketball tournament.

Sequim (15-7) will next face Renton (11-10) in a loser-out game in the consolation bracket Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. at Curtis High School in Federal Way.

The Wolves and Indians met in the opening round of the 2013 state tournament, a game which Renton won with a buzzer-beating half-court shot off a steal.

Alex Barry paced Sequim in Saturday’s win at Foss High School. The senior finished with 19 points, 16 rebounds, five steals, four assists and three blocks.

Barry had more than enough help, particularly from Jackson Oliver, who scored 14 points and had four assists and six rebounds.

Behind Barry and Oliver was a balanced effort: Vance Willis had eight points and seven rebounds, Alex Rutherford had eight points and Peyton Glasser contributed seven points and five boards.

Sequim put the game away fairly early, outscoring North Mason 23-5 in the second quarter to lead 35-16 at half.

After hoisting 20 shots from 3-point range in Thursday’s loss to Lindbergh, the Wolves went inside more against the Bulldogs. Doing so upped Sequim’s field goal shooting percentage and sent them to the free-throw line 25 times, of which they made 19.

Defensively, the Wolves made 17 steals.
