CHIMACUM — Four Port Townsend players reached double figures in scoring as the Redhawks flew past Chimacum 69-20 in a rivalry boys basketball contest that doubled as each team’s Olympic League 1A Division opener.
“When you get four guys in double figures you usually win the game and that’s something we haven’t been able to do recently,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.
Montoya getting buckets
The Redhawks opened up a 44-14 lead at halftime with Noa Montoya leading the way by scoring 18 of his game-high 22 points in the opening frames.
“We came out and pressed them and got on them and then we worked on a few things,” Webster said. “Noa got cooking and really, he’s been cooking all season. He’s had 22 in back-to-back games, had 29 against South Whidbey and 15 versus Crosspoint.”
Webster was encouraged by his team’s 27 two-point baskets.
“We’ve been living from the 3-point line all season,” Webster said. “I’m hoping it provides some confidence to shoot inside going forward.”
Lonnie Kenney had 11 points for Port Townsend. And Webster said Aiden Petta and Evan Toner each scored five good two’s on their way to 10 points apiece.
“We had 16 from our big guys [Toner and Devin Harris] and 21 from our backcourt [Kenney and Petta],” Webster said.
Hunter Cerna led Chimacum with 10 points.
“[Chimacum] coach [Mark] Bennett is doing a really good job with the guys that he has,” Webster said. “They came out and played us man-to-man [defensively] the whole game.
Bennett said the man defense was by design. He just hopes for better execution both offensively and defensively.
“They are good 3-point shooters, they are taller than we are and we wanted to take that away,” Bennett said of not playing zone defense.
“We need to score more points and we need to make it tougher defensively and that will be our focus,” Bennett said.

FORKS — The Spartans withstood a strong opening salvo from the Loggers, gaining the upper hand with a 21-point second quarter.
“In the second quarter we attacked the rim, Logan [Olson] hit a 3, but the scorebook shows two, two, two [made two-point baskets] and five different guys scored,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said. “We knew we should be doing a little bit better and attacked the rim and got buckets.”
Logan Olson led Forks in scoring for the second straight game, hitting for 20 points on the night, including four 3s.
“Logan hitting some 3s got us going,” Gooding said. “He hit one in each quarter. And Oscar Gonzalez played great individual defense. He doesnt reach, push or grab, he keeps his body in front of somebody.
Trey Baysinger added 16 points. “He had 12 of his 16 in the second and third quarters when we were getting going,” Gooding said.
Gooding said Crescent’s defense led to some poor shot selection by his team.
“They played a sagging pack-line man defense and instead of reversing the ball we got impatient and shot it early,” Gooding said.
Loggers coach Chris Ferrier was pleased with his team’s play against the 1A Spartans.
“We battled them hard,” Ferrier said. “I’m proud of the effort. We need to work on some things, but for a jump up against a pretty good 1A team we played really well.”
