PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles got a boost from its bench in a 61-38 Olympic League 2A Division boys basketball win over Kingston on Friday.
The Roughriders’ reserves poured in 31 points on a night when Port Angeles wasn’t as crisp as it had been in recent blowout wins versus Sequim and Blaine.
“We did some good things, we outrebounded them by 20, we turned them over 21 times,” Riders coach Kasey Ulin said. “I thought our bench was outstanding.
“It was one of those games where we didn’t play exceptionally well. The ball movement wasn’t as good as it has been our previous two games, there was too much dribbling. And when we are playing good we are moving and scoring off the pass rather than off the dribble.”
Ulin said Colton McGuffey and Anton Kathol each scored 11 points off the bench.
“Colton McGuffey was really amazing,” Ulin said. “He had 11 points and nine rebounds in about 10 minutes of action.
“And Gabe Long had a phenomenal game with five or six steals. He’s a smart player, schooled in the fundamentals, and is long and quick with good anticipation.”
Liam Clark grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked five shots and had three points.
“He was effective on the defensive end and challenged a lot of shots,” Ulin said. “He had great anticipation. We had 57 rebounds total and we had 20 offensive rebounds, we preach make the effort and don’t take plays off and that offensive rebound total is evidence of the extra effort.”
Port Angeles (2-1, 4-2) visits Centralia on Wednesday, then hosts Rochester on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Port Angeles Holiday Tournament. Sedro-Woolley, a team Ulin said is was one of the top 16 in Class 2A, will play Forks in the tournament’s other first-round game.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks held down the Knights inside and picked up a nonleague win at home Friday.
Kaiden Parcher scored 28 points with four rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead Port Townsend (1-1, 3-3).
“Kaiden got inside on them and had some good scores in the paint,” Redhawks coach Tom Webster said.
“Jackson Foster was in beast mode he had 10 points and 18 rebounds. Payton Lake played really efficiently off the bench with seven points and Kavi Baabahar in his first varsity start had six rebounds and four assists.”
Webster said Bremerton (0-3, 0-6) is a young team that can shoot from outside (the Knights hit nine 3s) and has some quickness.
“They lost a ton of kids to graduation but they should be back next year,” Webster said. “It was a good home win for us. We shared the ball well and outrebounded them.”
Port Townsend visits Vashon on Thursday for a nonleague game against a potential district playoff opponent.

LA CONNER — The Red Devils struggled to open the game, trailing the Braves 27-10 after one quarter, and were never able to dig out of that hole in a nonleague loss.
Freshman Captain Claplanhoo poured in 4 of 8 3-point shots to lead Neah Bay with 15 points and also swiped four steals.
Keith Johnson returned from an injured ankle and scored 11 points and had four steals for the Red Devils (0-4).
Neah Bay visited Darrington late Saturday and will travel to Taholah on Tuesday.

Olympic 73, Sequim 42
BREMERTON — Sequim stayed close early but got blitzed by Olympic beginning in the second quarter in a 73-42 loss on the road.
The Trojans outscored the Wolves 17-9 in the second and 24-12 in the third to blow Friday’s game open after holding just a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
Payton Glasser led the Wolves with 22 points.
Sequim (1-2, 4-2) next goes on a long road trip to Hawaii to play in a tournament. The Wolves’ next league game is Jan. 3 at Kingston.

POULSBO — Cameron Butler won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle, and was part of a first-place 400 freestyle relay team in a meet against North Kitsap.
Butler won the 200 IM in a time of 2:07.56 and the 100 freestyle in 52.09. The 400 freestyle relay team of Butler, Henry Shaw, Alex Hertzog and Taylor Martin won in a time of 3:53.33.’
Coach Rich Butler said senior Kelly MacIntosh-Ryan completed the toughest individual combinations for the Roughriders.
MacIntosh-Ryan swam two back-to-back swims. He completed the backstroke leg of the medley relay and immediately competed in the next event, the 200 freestyle. He dropped three seconds of his freestyle time, achieving a season-best and placing second at 2:40.00.
In the second half of the meet, MacIntosh-Ryan dropped nearly 20 seconds in the 500 freestyle again, placing second with a time of 7:07.51. He climbed out and anchored the 200 freestyle relay in the next event, helping his team place third.
The next meet is after winter break on Thursday, Jan 4, at home against Klahowya. Senior recognition will take place after diving. Port Angeles will recognize seniors Kelly MacIntosh-Ryan, Haylen Gerhard, Nate Toscano and Aldair Rivas, who are competing in their final home dual meet of the season.
