BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: McGoff’s buzzer-beating trey keeps Port Angeles’ season alive

SUMNER — Noah McGoff started calling for the ball with 10 seconds left in the game.

He finally got it when Lambros Rogers threw it from deep in the right post to the left elbow, where McGoff was standing far beyond the 3-point line.

McGoff caught and shot, and the ball went through the net right before time expired to give Port Angeles a 67-66 overtime win over Sammamish in the District 2/3 boys basketball tournament at Sumner High School on Friday.

“He made an amazing play,” Riders coach Kasey Ulin said. “Noah’s improved so much as far as his confidence level. He’s not thinking anymore, he’s just playing.”

The victory keeps the Roughriders’ season going. They next face Renton on Monday at noon at Foss High School in Tacoma. The winner of that game will play for a regional berth Wednesday, while the loser is eliminated from the postseason.

“I told the boys, I’ve won a lot of game as a player,” Ulin said, “but this is probably the greatest win I’ve been a part of.”

Rogers forced overtime Friday by scoring off an offensive rebound with

14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 60-60.

The Riders (11-11) fell behind in the extra period, and trailed 66-62 with 1:11 remaining, but they fought back to set up McGoff’s game-winner.

Janson Pederson hit a jumper after Port Angeles broke Sammamish’s press to make it 66-64.

The Riders then rebounded a missed free-throw, but with no timeouts left they had to set up a play on their own.

When they got the ball to the front court, Rogers passed it to Luke Angevine, who passed it to Grayson Peet around the 3-point line. Peet went back to Rogers, who was now in the post. Rogers made a move, but the defense collapsed, so he kicked it way back to McGoff for the game-winner.

“When we move the ball side to side and we get some movement and we get good looks, we’re a good shooting team,” Ulin said.

McGoff led Port Angels with 18 points. He also had four assists.

Rogers had 17 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Peet contributed 17 points, eight assists and four steals.

Abu Drammeh led Sammamish and all scorers with 24 points. The Totems made 10 3-pointers in the game.

“They shot the ball very, very well,” Ulin said.

“I told their coach after the game that no one deserved to lose this game.”

Renton (12-11) opened the district tournament with a 62-53 victory over Bremerton, but then fell to River Ridge 71-62 on Friday.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — What goes around, comes around.

In 2013, the Spartans defeated the young Knights 65-46 in a Southwest District play-in game at Forks High School.

Forks had experienced players like Braden Decker and Mark Jacobson. King’s Way Christian, meanwhile, had some freshman who are now seniors.

The tables were turned Friday.

“You can tell that they have worked hard and played together since that time,” Spartans coach Rick Gooding said after Friday’s game.

“When they ran offense, it was very smooth. Defensively they were very smooth in rotation.”

While the Knights, coached by former Washington State University player Daven Harmeling, are ranked fourth in Class 1A by The Associated Press, the Forks players are having their first significant postseason experience.

“You know, you could tell it was our first district game with this group of kids,” Gooding said.

“I didn’t think we would, but we came in a little bit gun shy, a little bit kind of shocked at the moment.

“When you play the [No. 4] team in the state, you got to bring it. You got to screen, you got to rebound, and unfortunately we didn’t do that.”

King’s Way hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take an early lead, and never looked back. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 22-6. At halftime, it was 35-10.

Marky Adams had eight of Forks’ 10 first-half points. Freshman Brandon Baar had the other two.

Adams finished with a team-best 12 points. Parker Browning added nine and Baar finished with five.

King’s Way’s Kienan Walter led all scorers with 21 points. The 6-foot-8 senior will play at the University of North Dakota next year.

The Spartans (7-14) next play a loser-out game against Castle Rock on Tuesday in Rochester.

The Rockets (13-8) lost to Eatonville 68-61 on Friday.
