PORT TOWNSEND — The Sequim boys basketball team won its second consecutive game by going on the road and defeating Port Townsend 55-45.
The Wolves were led by Payton Glasser’s 24 points and nine rebounds in Monday night’s victory. Glasser made 10 of 15 shots from the field, including all three of his 3-point attempts.
As a team, Sequim (3-2) made 23 of 42 field goals (54 percent) and 6 of 9 3-pointers. The Wolves assisted on 17 of their 23 field goals.
Jackson Oliver added 13 points for Sequim, while Nick Faunce had six points, six assists and four rebounds, and Riley Cowan scored five points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Class 1A Redhawks fell to 0-5, but their schedule has consisted of four Olympic League 2A teams and a tough Blaine squad.
They play their first Olympic League 1A game Thursday at home against rival Chimacum (0-5), which is winless against a similar slate, one made up completely of Olympic League 2A teams.
Monday’s 10-point loss was Port Townsend’s closest contest of the season.
Jacob Ralls led the Redhawks with 14 points while making 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Seren Dances and Detrius Kelsall each finished with nine points, and Kaiden Parcher had six.
Sequim continues its stretch of five games in eight days tonight at home against Kingston (2-2).
Port Angeles 54, Olympic 51, OT
BREMERTON — Grayson Peet scored all eight of the Roughriders’ points in overtime to help them pull off an early-season upset of the Trojans on the road.
Peet made a 3-pointer to give Port Angeles a lead with less than a minute left in the extra period Monday.
“The 3 he hit to give us the lead was big-time,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said.
“He has a confidence about him that I love. He really gets us going on both sides of the ball and he is playing at an extremely high level right now.”
After the Riders made a defensive stop and got the rebound, Peet hit two free throws to make it 54-51 with 5 seconds left.
“Olympic called timeout and drew up a play,” Ulin said. “We set up our defense and they were unable to get a decent shot off.
“This is a huge win for our program. This is a true testament on how hard the boys have been working. This is an extremely hard-working group who are starting to believe how good they actually can be.”
Port Angeles (1-0, 3-2) trailed 12-6 after one quarter, but played themselves within four points, 28-24, by halftime.
“We got off to a slow start offensively but stayed composed and stuck with our game plan,” Ulin said. “We came out and played very well in the third, outscoring Olympic 13-6.”
Peet finished with 15 points for Port Angeles.
Luke Angevine scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds while playing all 36 minutes.
Ulin said many Riders contributed to the victory.
“Luke Angevine was all over the court offensively and defensively,” Ulin said.
“Carson Shamp came in and was a spark off the bench, hitting the crucial 3s in the second quarter.
“Janson [Pederson] did what he has been doing all year, come in ready to play and gives us a boost .
“Lambros [Rogers] worked hard defending in the post, as did Colton McGuffey.
“Although Noah [McGoff] didn’t score, he played excellent defense.”
Rogers finished with 10 points, Pederson had seven and Shamp had six.
Port Angeles hosts North Mason (4-2) tonight.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to start 2-0 in league play,” Ulin said.
“We will look to build off of this win. I hope this win can be a turning point for this team, this season and, realistically, our program in general.
“I have never been more proud of a group of young men. They did what we constantly preach, they stayed composed, they fought hard and they played together all night long.
“This was a special evening for us.”
