BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Forks picks up important road win; Sequim suffers costly road loss

ELMA — Forks put itself in solid position to host a district playoff game with a 55-39 road win over Elma on Wednesday.

The Spartans got off to a strong start defensively, limiting the Eagles to just two first quarter points.

“We did a great job defensively,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said. “We played fast, forced 23 turnovers and did a lot of the stuff that we are able to do really well. And we rebounded the ball a lot better this time around.”

Trey Baysinger scored the first eight points of the game and had 24 points, despite sitting with foul trouble.

“We were up 14 and Trey picked up his second foul and sat a big chunk of the second quarter,” Gooding said.

Gooding said other guys stepped up as well.

“It was a combination,” Gooding said.

Logan Olson jumped the passing lanes and got some steals that led to runouts,” Gooding said.

“Tony Flores controlled our pace all game, especially in the fourth quarter. We want to play fast all game so you are too tired to keep up with us. By the fourth quarter he really starts pushing the ball and I’d bet half of [Trey’s] points came on Tony getting to the rim and handing off to him.”

Forks (4-2, 13-5) will visit Hoquiam on Friday.

The Spartans’ senior night girls and boys doubleheader against Montesano has been rescheduled to Monday. The Forks girls game tips at 5:30 p.m. and the boys follow at 7 p.m.

BREMERTON — The Wolves struggled with their shooting and fell on the road to the Trojans, the team chasing them for the fourth and final district playoff spot.

With the loss, Sequim is still in playoff position in fourth place in the Olympic League 2A Division, but this defeat complicates their chances for making postseason. The Wolves have a final regular-season game against 9-2 Port Angeles with Olympic one game behind.

Olympic’s final game tonight is against last-place Kingston. If Olympic wins and Sequim loses, the two teams will end up tied in fourth place at 6-6. Olympic and Sequim have also split two head-to-head games, so a Saturday tiebreaker would be needed to decide the last playoff berth.

Sequim only shot 30 percent from the field against Olympic, including just 2 for 16 from 3-point range.

Erik Christiansen led the Wolves with 18 points. Isaiah Moore had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Sequim (6-5, 11-8) plays at Port Angeles (9-2, 14-5) at 7:30 p.m. today.
